T&F: Huskies Kickoff Outdoor at Victor Lopez Classic

Jessica Rabius leads the way with a win in the 1,500 meters



HOUSTON, Texas – Jessica Rabius raced to a win in the women's 1,500 meters to lead the HCU track & field teams in the first outdoor meet of the season at Rice University's Holloway Field on Friday and Saturday at the Victor Lopez Classic.
 
Rabius, owner of six individual program records and part of one relay record, began her final outdoor season with a thrilling win in the 1,500 meters. The HCU senior crossed the finish line in 4:24.58 and beat Rice's Taigen Hunter-Galvan by one-tenth of a second. Sophomore Destiny Quintanilla raced to a fourth-place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:14.56 while Denzel Hinds also placed fourth in the 400 meter hurdles, crossing in 53.43. Ashton Munoz-Nieves clocked a time of 14.48 in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing fifth.
 
In field events, Liza Lap recorded a third-place finish in the discus throw with a top mark of 42.66m/139-11 while in the jumps, Josh Gillis-Harry leapt 14.60m/47-10.75 in the triple jump to finish third.
 
Next up for the Huskies is the 96th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas Wednesday through Saturday, Mar. 27-30.
