SB: HCU travels to Hammond to take on first-place SLU

Huskies hunting first Southland win

HCU (13-11, 0-3 SLC) at Southeastern Louisiana (21-6, 5-1 SLC)
Houston Christian University returns to action with a Southland Conference showdown versus first-place Southeastern Louisiana at North Oak Park in Hammond over the weekend. The Huskies are hunting their first SLC victory as they face the Lions in a twi-night doubleheader on Friday and single game on Saturday.

The Huskies are now 13-11 overall after dropping their mid-week tilt at No. 19 Baylor. HCU got on the board in the opening frame on an RBI double by Jasie Roberts to take a 1-0 lead, but the Bears exploded for two huge innings to cruise to the win. HCU would put a three-spot on the board in the fifth, with Roberts again providing the big blow with a two-run double.

After moving into the top 10 in at-bats and hits against Penn, Roberts jumped onto the RBI and doubles lists with her 2-3, two double, three RBI outing versus the Bears. She continues to lead the Huskies in hitting, slashing at a .388 / 1.073 / .612 clip thus far with two homers and a team-high 15 runs driven in. Roberts currently has a seven-game hitting streak, and is second on the club with six multi-hit games.

Haylie Savage is tops on the Husky squad with four homers and nine doubles. She is second on the club to Roberts with 13 RBI, as well as her .304 / 1.051 / .609 slash line.

AB Garcia has continued to her solid recent stretch, pushing her hitting streak to six games with a 2-3 outing on Tuesday at Baylor. She has batted .421 over the last six games, raising her average 44 points to .295, third on the club. Her stolen base against BU was the 31st of her career, tying her with Tammie Davis in eighth-place all-time.

Juls Garcia is batting .283 for the Huskies while Maggie Childs and Maddy Bailey have 10 and nine RBI respectively.

Ronni Grofman took the loss on Tuesday to fall to 3-5 on the season, but she continues to lead the staff with a 2.79 ERA. She has struck out 34 in 42.2 innings on the season. Lyndie Swanson and Katy Janes each have four wins to lead HCU.

HCU and Southeastern have met 34 times with the Lions holding a 24-10 lead in the all-time series. Southeastern took two of three from the Huskies in the regular season series last year in Houston. The Lions swept the Friday doubleheader before HCU salvaged a 4-3 victory in the Saturday finale. SLU then slipped past the Huskies 7-1 in the opening round of the 2023 SLC Tournament, immediately following a rain delay with a six-run sixth inning outburst that broke a 1-1 tie.

SLU is currently 21-6 overall and 5-1 in the league, tied with Lamar in first place in the SLC standings after two weekends of conference play. The Lions boast seven players hitting over .300 with three of those over .400 thus far, and have 59 stolen bases as a team through 27 games.

Maddie Watson leads the club at .412 and has 16 RBI, while Ka'Lyn Watson is batting .407 with two homers, 18 RBI and leads the team with 11 stolen bases.

2023 Southland Player and Hitter of the Year Bailey Krolczyk is the third Lion over .400 on the year, batting .403 with three homers and 21 RBI. Maria Detilier leads the team with 27 RBI and Lexi Johnson paces the club with five longballs.

Following the series at SLU, the Huskies will return home for a three-game series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi next weekend.
