HOUSTON, Texas – HCU battles Lamar for a three-game series on Southland Conference opening weekend at Husky Field.
The Huskies (7-13) are looking to bounce back from a seven-game road losing streak after claiming the four-game series (3-1) against Eastern Michigan in their last home series. The Huskies are led by
Trevor Roper currently sitting 10
th in the conference with a .365 batting average and is tied for 5
th in the SLC with seven doubles.
William Jewell leads HCU with a .600 slugging percentage while batting .350 average on the season with 11 RBIs, 10 runs, eight walks, and four home runs.
Samuel Benjamin currently holds a top-10 ranking in three categories in the conference heading into conference play. Benjamin is tied for 9
th in runs (19), tied for 6
th in home runs (4), and tied for 10
th with 42 total bases on the season.
Lamar (16-4) leads the conference and is currently ranked 6
th in the nation with a 3.14 ERA average among the program. Three of the five Cardinal' starting pitchers have ERAs of less than 3.00 average tallying 11 wins between the five pitchers.
Hunter Hesseltine (3-0) and Jacob Ellis (3-0) carry perfect records heading into conference play with 41 total strikeouts to just nine walks. Brooks Caple (2-2) leads the SLC starting pitchers with a 1.16 ERA while tossing 43 strikeouts while allowing just four earned runs and six walks on the season.
The Cardinals also lead the conference defensively with a .977 fielding percentage. The Lamar offense is led by River Orsak currently 5
th in the conference with a .386 batting average and tied for 7
th in the Southland with 27 hits on the year. Brayden Evans leads the Cardinals ranking tied for 7
th in the SLC with 20 runs and is tied for 2
nd in the conference with five home runs on the season.
The Huskies are 3-7 against the Cardinals since 2021. and claimed the previous matchup at Husky Field with a commanding 10-2 win in 2022 before sweeping Lamar later that same season with a 1-0 win in Beaumont.
