SB: HCU closes homestand against UTA

Huskies look to rebound quickly from tough weekend

HCU vs. UT-ARLINGTON

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University concludes its six-game homestand on Tuesday evening when it hosts University of Texas-Arlington at Husky Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5 pm.

The Huskies are now 13-9 overall and 0-3 in the Southland after last weekend's sweep at the hands of Lamar, snapping a seven-game winning streak. HCU sandwiched a 9-3 loss in the second game on Saturday between two heart-breaking one-run losses in the opener and finale.

Senior catcher Jasie Roberts still leads the Huskies offense, batting .371 with a 1.008 OPS. She paces the team in hits with 23 and is tied with Haylie Savage for the team lead in RBI with 12. She is tied for second on the club with Kaicey Hagler and Maddy Bailey, each of which have two homers.

The Deer Park product has moved onto the top 10 leaderboards for at-bats and hits, while pulling within one of the Top 10 in RBI. She is also closing in on career leaderboards in triples, walks, runs and games played.

Savage is batting .308, slugging .585 with a 1.075 OPS. She leads the squad in walks and runs scored and is second in hits.

The Garcia's each had a strong week to bolster their offensive numbers. Juls Garcia batted .450 with six runs scored and five RBI in five games on the week to raise her batting average to .302, third on the club. AB Garcia went 5-12 in four games and stole her seventh base of the season. She is now batting .282 and is second on the team in walks and third in runs scored.

Ronni Grofman took two hard-luck losses on the weekend to drop to 3-4 on the season. She allowed 13 hits in 13 innings, but just four runs, two earned while fanning 12 and walking four. She lowered her ERA to a team-best 2.37 despite the two defeats.

Swanson's outing on Saturday was the 100th of her career, making her just the fourth hurler in school history to hit that plateau.

HCU and UTA have met just seven times, with the Huskies holding a 4-3 lead. The two teams last played in 2019, when the Huskies claimed a 6-5 decision in Arlington.

UTA is led on offense by Camille Corona, who is batting .417 on the season. Lindsey Franklin is second with a .381 batting average while leading the club in homers (3) and RBI (16).

Jessica Adams is batting .268 with two homers and eight RBI, while also posting a 3-5 mark in the circle. She has a team-low 3.08 ERA in 38.2 innings pitched for the Mavs, who come into Tuesday's game with an 8-15 record.

Tuesday's game is the last game of the week for HCU, who have their bye weekend in Southland action. The Huskies don't return to the diamond again until a trip next Tuesday to Waco, where they will take on No. 19 Baylor.
