BSB: Huskies Sweep Double-Header Friday at Husky Field

HCU claims double-header, 6-5 & 4-0, to hold a 2-1 series lead

HOUSTON, Texas – The Huskies swept Eastern Michigan on double-header Friday to improve to 2-1 in the four-game series. HCU reclaims a .500% record at 6-6 heading into the series finale against the Eagles on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Huskies (6-6) lit up the scoreboard early posting three runs in the bottom of the first inning of game one with a Tyler LaRue home run scoring Samuel Benjamin and Dylan LaRue. After the Eagles got on the board scoring a run in the top of the fourth inning, HCU got the lead back to three runs, 4-1, with Trevor Roper scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning. Eastern Michigan (3-7) got within one run in the top of the sixth inning scoring two runs and grabbed their only lead of the day in the top of the seventh inning recorded two runs to take a 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the final inning of game one, the Huskies tied the game on a bunt by Josh Prinner scoring Damian Ruiz and tallied the winning run on a throwing error by EMU's pitcher.

The Huskies shutout the Eagles allowing only two hits and five walks in the entire seven innings of game two of the double-header Friday. The Huskies got off to a fast start again posting three runs in the bottom of the second inning. William Jewell put the Huskies on the board when Ty Hodge doubled down the left-field line before scoring on an RBI HBP from Graham Laxton. Katcher Halligan scored the final run of the second inning when Ruiz hit a sacrifice fly to center field. Benjamin scored the last run of the afternoon on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Huskies were led by Tyler LaRue in game one going 1-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs. Trevor Roper went 1-for-3 with a double and a run while Josh Prinner went 1-for-1 with an RBI. In game two, six different Huskies tallied hits. Benjamin went 1-for-3 with a double, a run and a stolen base. Ty Hodge went 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run while Katcher Halligan went 1-for-3 with a run. Nicholas Willard (2-1) earned the win in game one pitching .2 shutout innings of relief allowing one hit with a strikeout. Rye Gunter started game one for the Huskies pitching five innings allowing one earned run on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Keevyn Goss (1-0) earned his first career win as a Husky pitching 3.2 shutout innings to start game two. The freshman gave up one hit with five walks and six strikeouts. Parker Edwards pitched 3.1 shutout innings of relief in game two allowing one hit with three strikeouts.

Eastern Michigan was led by Nathan Ball, in game one, going 2-for-4 with a run and a walk while Blake McRae went 1-for-2 with a run, an RBI and a walk. In game two, Giano Zuccaro and Lucas Johnson were the only two Eagles to record hits with each adding a walk. Aaron Pirkle (0-1) was tagged with the loss in game one pitching .1 innings of relief allowing two earned runs on a walk. Drew Beckner started game one pitching 5.2 innings giving up four earned runs on two hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Jimmy Kunst (0-1) deemed the loss in game two pitching three innings to start the game allowing three earned runs on four hits with two walks.

The Huskies will close out the four-game series against EMU on Saturday at Husky Field starting at 2 p.m.
