SB: Huskies head to East Texas for three-game series with SFA

Three-game weekend in the Piney Woods before six-game homestand begins next Tuesday

HCU at STEPHEN F. AUSTIN STATE
Fresh off a 4-1 homestand, Houston Christian University hits the road to take on former Southland foe Stephen F. Austin State University this weekend. The Huskies and Lumberjacks will play a three-game series starting with Friday's doubleheader and culminating with a 1 pm finale on Saturday afternoon. All three games will be played at SFA Softball Field.

The Huskies took four of five on the first homestand of the season capped off by Tuesday's 6-3 victory over cross-town foe Texas Southern University. HCU had defeated North Dakota last Tuesday, then in its Husky Classic beat Prairie View before splitting a pair of contests with Missouri-Kansas City.

HCU got on the board first in the first against TSU on Tuesday and would never trail thereafter. After Haylie Savage's one-out single, Jasie Roberts deposited her second homer of the season, a no-doubter over the wall in left center that gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead. Breana Herrera's RBI double down the left field line later in the inning pushed the margin to three.

After TSU scored a pair in the fourth, Riley Martin had an RBI groundout in bottom half to double the HCU's lead to 4-2 over the Tigers. Maggie Childs had an RBI single and Heidi Maytum drew a bases loaded walk to plate another couple in the sixth.

Katy Janes powered through four innings to pick up her third win of the season and Ronni Grofman picked up her first career save with three strong innings and five strikeouts.

Jasie Roberts leads the offense, batting .405 with two homers and seven RBI. Savage is batting .316 and leads the club with nine RBI while sitting tied with Roberts for the team lead in homers with two of her own. AB Garcia is batting .286 with six stolen bases, while Maggie Childs and Maddy Bailey have driven in eight runs each.

The win for Janes gives her the team lead with three, while Lyndie Swanson and Grofman each have two and one save apiece. Swanson has a team-low 2.84 ERA, while Janes paces the teams in strikeouts with 27 in 26 innings.

Swanson's save in the Sunday affair against Kansas City was the third of her career, tying her for first place all-time at HCU. She now needs 1.1 innings pitched to become just the ninth hurler in school history with 400-plus innings in a career.

HCU and SFA have met 46 times, with the most recent meetings coming in a three-game series in 2021 in East Texas, when the Jacks took two of three from the Huskies. Stephen F. Austin is currently 5-12 overall on the season after splitting a pair of games in Natchitoches, Louisiana against Northwestern State.

The Jacks are led by senior outfielder Madison Nguyen who is batting .345 with 10 RBI. Junior outfielder Amiah Galcatcher is batting .313 with a homer and four RBI.

Two pitchers have two wins apiece for SFA; senior Aydenne Brown and junior Alexis Telford. Brown leads the team in ERA a 2.65, while Telford's 26 K's leads the entire staff.

After the three-game set in Nacogdoches, the Huskies will return to begin a six-game homestand. The stretch begins next Tuesday when HCU welcomes the University of Pennsylvania to Husky Field for a 3 pm doubleheader.
