NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – The Huskies closed out the 2024 Gulf Coast Collegiate hosted by New Orleans at English Turn Golf & Country Club with a 4
th place finish. HCU fired a final round 19-over par, 307, to claim their second top-5 finish in last three starts after finishing 4
th place at the 2023 La Tour Intercollegiate to cap-off the fall schedule. In the 16-team field in the Big Easy, the Huskies posted rounds of 302, 300, and 307 for a 909 total at 45-over par. HCU finished the tournament tied for 3
rd as a team recording 42 birdies on the week.
The Huskies were led by
Ben Caton capturing his first top-15 finish on the season after carding a final round three-over par, 75. The graduate senior claimed a tie for 13
th place firing rounds of 78-72-75 for a 225 total at nine-over par. The Scotland native finished second in the 92-player field in par-3 scoring average with a 2.92 average, one-under par for the week. After making five birdies on the 36-hole day one, Caton added six birdies in the final round to total 11 birdies for the week. In the final pairing of the day, Caton opened with a minor blemish before rolling in back-to-back birdies at the 2
nd and 3
rd holes to get under-par. A double-bogey at the 4
th hole followed by another birdie at the par-5, 6
th hole; Caton made the turn at even par. Knocking in birdies at the 11
th and 13
th holes to get to two-under par, a trio of blemishes capped off by a final birdie at the par-3, 17
th hole, gave Caton a three-over par finish in the final round.
Leading the Huskies after an opening round two-over par, 74,
Roy Barrera claimed his second top-25 of the year finishing in a tie for 23
rd place at 13-over par. The sophomore posted a final round six-over par, 78, to fire rounds of 74-77-78 for a 229 total on the week. The Boerne native led the Huskies with 12 pars on day two and made seven total birdies on the week adding a lone birdie in round three at his opening hole, the par-5, 2
nd hole. Barrera tied the Huskies lead in par-4 scoring average with a 4.20 average, tied for fourth best in the field.
Cooper New claimed his second-best finish on the season in a tie for 25
th place at 14-over par (finished T-8 at the 2023 La tour Intercollegiate). New improved every round of the 54-hole tournament, 80-76-74, posting a Husky low final round of two-over par, 74. New matched his tournament total birdies from day one adding three birdies in the final round starting with a birdie at his opening hole, the par-4, 4
th hole. After a trio of blemishes got New to two-over par through seven-holes, New rolled in birdies at the 11
th and 15
th holes to get back to even-par through 12-holes. A couple of bogeys to close out the tournament gave the senior his best finish of the calendar year.
Brooks Pawlak carded rounds of 75-79-80 for a 234 total at 18-over par. The freshmen tied for the second most birdies for the team with a total of nine birdies on the week. After knocking in six birdies on day one, Pawlak rolled in three birdies in the final round at the 1
st, 7
th and 15
th holes. The Kingwood native claimed a tie for 39
th place and led the team in par-5 scoring with a 4.75 average, three-under par for the tournament.
Mason Napier rounded out the Husky lineup also finishing in a tie for 39
th place firing rounds of back-to-back three-over par, 75s, and a final round 12-over par, 84. The sophomore made nine total birdies for the week adding a lone birdie at the par-3, 12
th hole, in the final round. The Paris, Texas native tied the team lead in par-4 scoring average and finished tied for fourth best in the tournament field.
Playing as an individual,
Oliver Dickman recorded rounds of 87-75-78 for a 240 total. The senior tallied six birdies for the week adding two birdies in the final round at the par-4, 13th hole, and the par-5, 15th hole. The England native finished the week in a tie for 66th place at 24-over par.
Memphis went wire-to-wire to claim the 2024 Gulf Coast Collegiate at 16-over par. The Tigers posted rounds of 292-298-290 to capture a 10-shot victory over UIW, who finished in 2
nd place. Host, New Orleans, notched 3
rd place at 32-over par, 16-shots back of the Tigers. Memphis's Diego Lourenco claimed the individual title carding rounds of 72-71-73 to finish even-par for the week, one-shot clear of fellow Tiger teammate, Jack Tanner. UNO's Matt Weber finished 3
rd place at two-over par, two-shots back.
The Huskies will continue the championship season hosting the 2024 HCU Colin Montgomerie Invitational on March 4-5 at Sweetwater Country Club in Sugar Land, Texas.
