HOUSTON, Texas – The HCU baseball team sealed the win in game one of the four-game series against Le Moyne on opening weekend in dramatic fashion with a walk-off double by
Parker Edwards in the bottom of the 9
th inning to win, 4-3. HCU captured its first opening day victory since 2021.
The Huskies (1-0) struck first in the bottom of the second inning with a
Tyler LaRue solo shot to left field to take an early, 1-0, lead. After the Dolphins (0-1) tied the game in the top of the third, the Huskies answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by
Tyler LaRue to bring
Ty Hodge across the plate. Le Moyne again had an answer, however, taking the lead in the top of the eight inning with Adam Sullivan plating Jack Cannon on a fielder's choice before stealing second and then scoring on a two-out single to right field off the bat of Wyatt Patchett.
The Huskies tied the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs when
Tyler LaRue doubled to center field to score his brother,
Dylan LaRue, who reached on a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After holding the Dolphins scoreless in the top half of the ninth, HCU got the bottom half rolling with a single up the middle from pinch hitter
Lane Sparks on an 0-2 count. That set up
Parker Edwards to drive a walk-off double to left-center to bring Spark home and send the Huskies home with the win.
HCU was led by
Tyler LaRue who finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBI, a home run, a double and a walk. Edwards' walk-off double was his lone hit of the day while Sparks' pinch hit and run scored marked a memorable start to his collegiate career.
Mark Lopez (1-0) earned his first win as a Husky, pitching .2 shutout innings of relief.
James Kirkpatrick, a senior transfer from Harvard, started the game for the Huskies with four solid innings. The Houston native allowed one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Jarek Wells pitched two shutout innings of relief with a strikeout and a walk.
Le Moyne was led by Nick Nevins who went 3-for-4 while Zach Brush went 1-for-3 with a run and two walks. Billy Hoffacker (0-1) was tagged with the loss, pitching two innings of relief and allowing two earned runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. Max Parker started the game for the Dolphins with an immaculate inning in the bottom of the first, striking out three batters on nine pitches.
