WSOC: HCU battles to scoreless draw with Lamar

Huskies earn point in defensive struggle, will host Senior Day on Sunday afternoon

HOUSTON – Houston Christian University and Lamar University battled to a 0-0 draw in Southland Conference action on Friday night at Sorrels Field.

A defensive struggle ensued from the kickoff with neither squad giving much ground. Emmy McKeon would take care of both of Lamar's shots on goal in the first frame, while the Huskies managed two solid chances of their own.

The first came on a counter attack in the 35th minute when Lia Bonet got the ball up the left channel and fed Olivia Rossman at the top of the 18. Rossman took the pass and after a couple of dribbles poked a solid right-footed shot that was handled by Lamar's Taylor Howard on a diving grab.

Then, with just 55 seconds to go before intermission, Isabella Cheek had a go from 25 yards out, but her left-footed strike to the very top shelf was punched away by Howard.

It was more of the same in the second stanza, as each team locked in on the defensive end. The Cardinals would outshoot the Huskies 6-1 over the final 45 minutes, and their best chance came with just under 20 minutes left.

Ella Carmody launched a long pass that landed just in front of the penalty spot. Both Isela Ramirez and Rafiatu Alhassan took whacks at it right in front of the goal line, but a nudge away by McKeon was followed by a clearance from Danika Etter toeing the line that ultimately kept the Cardinals at bay.

Isabella Cheek and Olivia Rossman had the shots on goal for HCU, while Emmy McKeon had four saves in earning her fourth clean sheet of the season.

Taylor Howard made two saves for the Cardinals, who go to 4-6-5 overall and 2-2-3 in the SLC. Lamar would outshoot the Huskies 10-6, including 4-2 on goal on the evening.

HCU goes to 3-8-5 overall and 1-3-3 in Southland Conference play. The Huskies return to Fondren Road for a Sunday matinee at Sorrels Field, as they host Southeastern Louisiana at 3:30 pm in the second half of a "Senior Day" doubleheader with the HCU men.

Outgoing seniors Taylor Sanderson, Alexa Huerta, Chloe Bagshaw, Emily Jaimes, Felicia Hernandez and Katie Marker will be honored following completion of the match against SLU.
