SAN ANTONIO, Texas – After a slow start and a scoreless first 70 minutes, a flurry of late goals in a six-minute span left host UIW with a 2-1 victory of the HCU women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium.
In the first half, the Huskies (3-8-4, 1-3-2 SLC) didn't attempt a shot while the Cardinals (6-6-2, 3-3-0 SLC) attempted five, with three on target that were all stopped by HCU goalkeeper
Emmy McKeon. The score remained 0-0 at the half.
McKeon made two more saves early in the second half but the hosts got on the board in the 75
th minute when a UIW corner kick was bounced around in front of the goal and eventually fell to the feet of Melissa Bailey who hit a one-timer that deflected off a teammate and into the net. It didn't take long for the Huskies to answer, however, with
Alexa Huerta intercepting a UIW pass in the attacking third. Huerta passed back to
Olivia Rossman who let fly from 25 yards out and tucked the ball perfectly into the top left corner to even things up at 1-1 in the 77
th minute.
UIW netted the game-winner less than four minutes later when Sierra Wannamaker neatly deflected a Sinead Duffy cross into the box past McKeon.
Rossman's goal was her second in as many games and gives her a team-leading four on the season. The assist from Huerta was her third of the year. McKeon ended the day with six saves. The Cardinals out-shot the Huskies, 18-5.
The Huskies will be back at home for their next two, first hosting Lamar at Sorrels Field on Friday, Oct. 18, before welcoming Southeastern to campus on Sunday, Oct. 20.
