MGOLF: HCU Places 11th at Zach Johnson Invitational

The Huskies tally 27 birdies and an eagle at Glen Oaks Country Club

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Huskies capped off the Zach Johnson Invitational hosted by Drake at Glen Oaks Country Club. After posting rounds of eight-over par, 292, and 16-over par, 300, on opening day, HCU closed out the 54-hole tournament with a 26-over par, 310, in the final round to finish in 11th place.

Leading the Huskies lineup, Brooks Pawlak followed up a two-over par, 73, and a three-over par, 74, on opening day with a seven-over par, 78, in the final round. The freshman tallied nine birdies for the week and led the Huskies with a 4.44 par-5 scoring average, five-under par total. Pawlak recorded back-to-back birdies at the 8th and 9th holes before adding another at the par-5, 15th hole, in the final round. The Kingwood native finished in a tie for 47th place at 12-over par.

Cooper New carded a final round eight-over par, 79, after firing rounds of one-over par, 72, and three-over par, 74, on day one. The junior finished the week leading the Huskies in par-3 scoring average with a 3.25 and finished under-par on par-5's for the week with a 4.89 scoring average. The Comfort native joined Pawlak finishing in a tie for 47th place at 12-over par.

Roy Barrera posted a final round nine-over par, 80, after shooting rounds of three-over par, 74, and four-over par, 75, on opening day of the tournament. The sophomore rolled in two birdies in the final round at the par-4, 6th hole, and the par-5, 11th hole. Barrera finished the week under-par on the par-5's with a 4.67 scoring average, three-under par total, and claimed a tie for 57th place at 16-over par.

Firing the low final round for the Huskies, Benjamin Dabos backed up a two-over par, 73, and a 12-over par, 83, on day one with a three-over par, 74, in the final round. Dabos recorded the only Husky' eagle of the week in the opening round at the par-5, 9th hole. The freshman birdied the same hole again in the final round while adding another birdie at the par-5, 15th hole. The Argentina native finished in a tie for 61st place at 17-over par.

Rounding out the Husky lineup, Haven McEntire posted rounds of 14-over par, 85, six-over par, 77, and eight-over par, 79. The junior knocked in four birdies for the week to finish in 72nd place at 28-over par.

Iowa State went wire-to-wire to claim the Zach Johnson Invitational team title at 23-under par, eight-shots clear of North Dakota State at 15-under par who claimed second place. Iowa State's Luke Gutschewski claimed victory of the individual title with rounds of 65, 66, and 67 to finish at 12-under par. North Dakota State's Gavin Cronkhite finished 2nd place at seven-under par, five-shots back.

The Huskies will return to action at the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate hosted by Arkansas State on Monday, Oct. 2nd and Tuesday, Oct. 3rd in Jonesboro, Arkansas at Ridge Point Country Club.
