DES MOINES, Iowa – The Huskies finish day one of the Zach Johnson Invitational at Glen Oaks Country Club in 11
th place after posting team rounds of eight-over par, 292, and 16-over par, 300. The Huskies tallied 19 birdies and an eagle on the 36-hole opening day.
Cooper New leads the Huskies after firing rounds of one-over par, 72, and three-over par, 74, on day one. The Comfort, Texas native commenced the tournament with a birdie on his first hole, the par-5, 9
th hole. After a couple of blimps to the scorecard at the 12
th and 13
th holes, New bounced back quickly rolling in a birdie at the par-3, 16
th hole, and another at the par-4, 4
th hole. The junior picked up right where he left off in the first round birdieing the 9
th hole again before adding another at the par-4, 1
st hole, and ending the day with a birdie at the last hole, the par-4, 8
th hole. New is tied for 28
th place heading into the final round.
After starting four-over in his first seven holes,
Brooks Pawlak got back on track knocking in a birdie at the par-5, 15
th hole. The freshman finished the opening round two-under on his last 11 holes after adding another birdie at the par-4, 4
th hole, shooting a two-over par, 73, in round one. In round two, Pawlak tallied four birdies starting with a birdie on his second hole, the par-5, 9
th hole, and rolling in another birdie at the par-5, 11
th hole. The Kingwood, Texas native picked up another birdie at the par-4, 1
st hole, before closing out opening day with a birdie at the par-4, 7
th hole. Pawlak sits in a tie for 32
nd place with 18-holes left to play.
Roy Barrera posted an opening round three-over par, 74, and a second round four-over par, 75. The sophomore birdied the par-5, 15
th hole, in both rounds and added another birdie at the par-4, 10
th hole, in round two. Barrera is tied for 43
rd place heading into day two.
In his second tournament as a Husky,
Benjamin Dabos capped off his opening round two-over par, 73, with an eagle on his last hole, the par-5, 9
th hole. The freshman struggled to keep the momentum in round two, but a birdie at the par-4, 4
th hole, steadied the storm to finish his last six holes in even-par on his way to a 12-over par, 83. Dabos is tied for 65
th place through 36-holes.
In his third season debut,
Haven McEntire rounded out the Husky lineup with an opening round 14-over par, 85, including a birdie at the par-4, 8
th hole. The junior found his form in the second round rolling in a birdie at the par-4, 13
th hole, and ending the day with another birdie at the par-5, 9
th hole. The Georgetown, Texas native posted a round two six-over par, 77, to sit in 77
th place with 18-holes left to play at Glen Oaks Country Club.
Iowa State finished day one at 20-under par after firing rounds of 272 and 276 to claim a five-shot lead over North Dakota State at 15-under par. DePaul sits in third place at four-under par, 16-shots back. Iowa State's Luke Gutschewski holds the individual lead at 10-under par, three shots ahead of teammate Zach May, North Dakota State's Gavin Cronkhite, and South Dakota's Max Schmidtke, all at seven-under par.
The final round of the Zach Johnson Invitational will commence at 9 a.m. tomorrow. The Huskies will start on holes 11 through 14 playing alongside St. Thomas and North Dakota. Live stats are available via Birdiefire.com.
