WSOC: Huskies Head East to Battle Lamar

HCU takes aim at the defending SLC champions in Beaumont

BEAUMONT, Texas – HCU is set for a showdown with the defending Southland Conference women's soccer champion Lamar at the LU Soccer Complex this Friday evening at 7:00 p.m.

HCU (3-4, 1-0 SLC) opened conference play at home this past Sunday with a 5-0 victory over the Nicholls Colonels after playing a non-conference schedule that included just one team currently with a sub-.500 record. The Huskies offense has been firing the last two games with 28 shots on target resulting in seven goals. Sophomore midfielder Alexa Huerta is currently tied for second in the league with her team-leading four goals.

Lamar (6-2-1, 1-0 SLC) comes into the match on a five-game win streak that includes a win over a ranked Xavier team. During their win streak, the Cardinals have out-scored opponents 11-0 and held a 46-20 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Cariel Ellis leads the Cardinals and it tied for second in the SLC with four goals, all game-winners, scored.

The Huskies and Cardinals played twice last year with LU defeating HCU, 3-0, at Sorrels Field during the regular season. The two teams then met in the semifinals of the 2022 SLC Tournament and despite nine saves from goalkeeper Chloe Bagshaw the Huskies fell, 1-0.

Following Friday's road match, the Huskies will play three of their next four at home. HCU hosts Texas A&M-Corpus Christi next Friday, Sep. 29, and then faces McNeese on Sunday, Oct. 1.
