MGOLF: HCU Finishes 14th at Wildcat Invitational

The Huskies fired rounds of 310, 289, and 300 at Colbert Hills Golf Course

MANHATTAN, Kansas – The Huskies closed out the Wildcat Invitational with a 12-over par, 300 team score, to finish in 14th place. HCU fired rounds of 310, 289, and 310 in the season opener at Colbert Hill Golf Course.  

The Huskies were led by Brooks Pawlak capping off his first tournament as a Husky with a four-over par, 76, in the final round. Being the only player in the 81-player field to record two eagles in the same round, Pawlak recorded an eagle at the par-5, 16th and 7th hole. The freshman recorded 33 pars, seven birdies, and two eagles to start his HCU career with a tie for 35th place finish.

Roy Barrera posted the best round for the Huskies in the final round with a one-under par, 71, including five birdies for the round and three straight birdies starting at the 6th hole. The sophomore climbed 26 spots after rounds of 76 and 74 on day one to finish the tournament tied for 35th place.

Cooper New fired a final round five-over par, 77, starting with back-to-back birdies at the 15th and 16th holes before adding another birdie at the par-5, 1st hole. The senior tallied rounds of 78 and 71 on day one and finished the Wildcat Invitational tied for 61st place.

Benjamin Dabos recorded two birdies on day two at the 4th and 16th holes on his way to a four-over par, 76, finish. After posting rounds of 79 and 77 on opening day, the freshman finished in a tie for 71st place.  

Mason Napier rounded out the Huskies lineup shooting a 11-over par, 83, in the final round. After posting back-to-back rounds of 78 on day one, the sophomore finished the tournament in a tie for 78th place.

Host, Kansas State, goes wire-to-wire to claim the team title at 17-under par after posting rounds of 284, 273, and 290. Southern Illinois finished second at 12-under par and Kansas City notched third place at six-under par. Grand Canyon's Nicky Kling took the individual title finishing at 13-under par after firing rounds of 66, 69, and 68. Kansas State's Alex Lindstrom claimed second place at 10-under par, two-shots ahead of Southern Illinois's Edouard Cereto in third place.

The Huskies will return for the Zach Johnson Invitational hosted by Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa at Glen Oaks Country Club on Monday, Sep. 25th and Tuesday, Sep. 26th.
