T&F: Gibson and Rabius Win Gold on Final Day at SLC Outdoors

The two seniors have totaled 16 conference medals in their careers



COMMERCE, Texas – Senior Garrett Gibson and Jessica Rabius earned event wins and the HCU women's team enjoyed the best overall showing at a Southland Conference Outdoor Championship in program history on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
 
Rabius added another gold medal to her collection in the 1,500 meters, winning by nearly two seconds with a time of 4:34.95. Later in the evening, she made it a double-gold night with a win in the 5,000 meters by holding off New Orleans' Rebecca Dekay and finishing in 17:35.27. The senior has now won nine Southland Conference medals over the course of her career.
 
Gibson raced to gold in the men's 110 meter hurdles final, crossing in 13.85 to earn career medal number six. He then went on to finish just off the podium in fourth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 52.39.
 
Alex Piquart took silver in the men's 800 meters, posting a time of 1:50.95 to finish less then three-tenths of a second out of first. Travis Jacobs and Krzysztof Turski placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 800m finals with times of 1:53.27 and 1:55.79. In the women's 800m, Eline Mast recorded a fourth-place finish with a mark of 2:12.99.
 
Turski added a fifth-place finish in the men's 1500m, finishing in 3:58.93, with teammate Justice Artisst posting a time of 4:00.25 to come in eighth. In women's hurdles finals, Lanaye Keys came in seventh in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.73 while Brianna Hinds ran 1:03.61 in the 400h to also place seventh.
 
In the first event of the day, the women's discus, senior Liza Lap set a new program record by more than eight feet and won silver with a throw of 48.04m/157-7.0. Reem Tammam then earned a spot on the podium in the triple jump, posting a wind-aided jump of 12.75m/41-10.0 (+2.6). At the same time, Spencer Blake was picking up three points for the men with a PR throw of 46.04m/151-0.0 in the discus.
 
During the final set of field events, Yassin Salem leapt to a bronze medal thanks to a wind-aided mark of 15.40m/50-6.25 (+2.8). Rebecca Pecora, meanwhile, closed out a terrific meet with a height of 1.62m/5-3.75 in the high jump, tying for sixth.
 
The HCU women racked up 87.5 points, the team's highest-ever point total at a Southland Conference Outdoor Championship meet, and achieved the highest finish in program history, taking fourth. The men, meanwhile, totaled 51 points.
