BSB: Power Surge Lifts HCU Past SFA, 14-7

A nine-run third and combined five home runs launch Huskies over the Lumberjacks

Box Score NACOGDOCHES, Tx – The Huskies dominated former Southland Conference opponent SFA, 14-7, in a non-conference matchup at Jaycees Field. After falling to SFA, 21-14, in a 15-inning shootout during the Sugar Land Classic at the beginning of the season, the Huskies got revenge posting 12 runs in the first four innings, including nine runs in the third inning, and cruising to a seven-run victory.

HCU (10-30, 6-9 SLC) were led by junior infielder Reed Chumley who went 4-for-5 with two home runs, two doubles, three runs, two RBIs, and a walk. Freshman second baseman Cash Benavidez went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs, three runs, and two walks. Freshman center fielder Trent Baker went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, a run, and a walk. Junior designated hitter Samuel Benjamin went 1-for-6 with a home run and three RBIs while junior first baseman Cash McNicholas went 1-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs.

Freshman righthander Baylor Baumann (1-3) earned the win, pitching four innings of relief for the Huskies, allowing one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts. Freshman righthander Jonathan Valdez started the game, pitching four innings giving up six earned runs on 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Senior righthander Chad Ricker closed out the game pitching a shutout inning of relief with three walks and two strikeouts.

The Lumberjacks (19-23, 11-13 WAC) were led by Alex Rodgers who went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs while Cal Martin also went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Tom Biggs went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a run, and a walk. Cole Hill also went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk.

Righthander Skyler Jaco (2-3) took the loss for the Lumberjacks, pitching two innings to start the game, allowing six earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. SFA used 10 pitchers in the midweek game.

After allowing three runs in the first two innings, the Huskies posted nine runs in the top of the third inning including three home runs starting with a Cash Benavidez home run to left field scoring Luke Bard. After back-to-back singles by Trent Baker and Damian Ruiz, Samuel Benjamin hit a three-run home run to left field. After Reed Chumley doubled to left center, Cash McNicholas homered to left center driving in Chumley. Baker singled through the left side scoring Benavidez and Luke Bard to give HCU a, 9-3, lead. The Huskies added to their lead by scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning starting with a Chumley solo home run to left field. Dylan LaRue scored on a single down the left field line off the bat of Austin Roccaforte before scoring on an RBI-walk from Benavidez. HCU added another run in the top of the fifth inning when Chumley homered to right center for his second home run of the game. The Huskies final run came in the top of the eighth inning when Benavidez scored on an error by SFA's Tom Biggs.

SFA got on the board early scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning starting with a Clayton Loranger double down the left field line scoring Alex Rodgers before Tom Biggs singled through the right-side driving in Loranger. The Lumberjacks added another run in the bottom of the second inning when Tyree Carr homered to right field. After giving up nine runs in the top of the third inning, SFA cut into the lead scoring a run in the bottom of the third inning when Cole Hill singled up the middle scoring Biggs. The Lumberjacks added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning starting with Carr scoring on an RBI groundout by Loranger before Cal Martin singled to center field scoring Rodgers. SFA's last run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Julian Thompson scored on a Martin double to right center.

The Huskies return to action for a three-game Southland Conference series against New Orleans on Friday, May 5th through Sunday, May 7th on Maestri Field at Privateer Park.
