BSB: HCU drops series opener at Lamar

Seven-run seventh halts Huskies in Beaumont


 
BEAUMONT, Tx. –-- HCU dropped the opener of the final regular season series of the year, fallling 11-1 to Lamar at Vincent-Beck Stadium on Thursday night. 

Lamar scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning when Ryan Snell doubled down the left field line to score Tanner Wilson and Ben MacNaughton.

In the fourth, the Huskies got on the board as a solo homer to right field from William Jewell cut the lead to 2-1. 

The Cardinals would answer that tally in the bottom half of the inning when River Orsak scored on an RBI groundout by Kirkland Banks. The lead grew to 4-1 in the very next frame, as Snell again doubled to left field, this time scoring Kevin Bermudez.

Lamar would then end the game early, pushing seven runs across the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning to finish off the evening. . 

HCU (11-35, 7-14 SLC) was led by senior shortstop Austin Roccaforte, who went 2-4. Junior designated hitter Samuel Benjamin was 1-for-2 with a double, while Jewell went 1-3 with the homer and lone HCU RBI.

Junior right-hander Rye Gunter started and took the loss for the Huskies, going 5.2 innings and giving up four earned runs on eight hits. He walked two and fanned five in falling to 1-5 on the season.

Ryan Snell led the offensive attack for the Cardinals, going who 3-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs, and a run. Ben MacNaughton went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs while Kevin Bermudez went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, and a run for Lamar (30-21, 11-11 SLC).

Jacob Ellis (4-4) earned the win, giving up one run on five hits with eight strikeouts in 5.2 innings.

Game two of the three-game series is slated for 6 pm on Friday evening.
