HOUSTON, Tx – HCU drops the series finale against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 7-2, at Husky Field.
The Huskies (9-30, 6-9 SLC) were led by senior shortstop
Austin Roccaforte who went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, and a run. Freshman right fielder
Damian Ruiz went 1-for-4 with an RBI while junior first baseman
Cash McNicholas went 1-for-2 with a walk. Freshman centerfielder
Trent Baker went 1-for-3 with a run.
Senior righthander
Will Ripoll (0-4) took the loss, pitching 2.2 innings to start the game allowing six earned runs on nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Junior righthander
Jarek Wells pitched two shutout innings of relief giving up two hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
The Islanders (20-23, 8-7 SLC) were led by Max Puls who went 3-for-6 with a home run, two runs, and an RBI. Brendan Ryan went 3-for-5 with a triple, a double, a run, and two stolen bases. Leo Markotic went 1-for-4 with three RBIs and a walk.
Evans Hendricks (3-0) earned the win for the Islanders, pitching 6.1 innings to start the game, allowing two earned runs on four hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts.
The Huskies scored the last two runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when
Austin Roccaforte doubled down the left field line scoring
Trent Baker. Roccaforte scored on a single to left field off the bat of
Damian Ruiz.
The Islanders took an early lead in the top of the first inning when Max Puls scored on a wild pitch. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi posted five runs in the top of the third inning starting with a Puls home run to right center field before Tre Jones singled through the right-side scoring Brendan Ryan. Jones scored on a bunt single off the bat of Sean Curtis before Leo Markotic singled to center field scoring Curtis and Christian Smith-Johnson. The Islanders scored their last run in the top of the sixth inning when Smith-Johnson scored on a fielding error by HCU's
Austin Roccaforte.
The Huskies will return to action against former Southland Conference opponent, SFA, for a non-conference midweek matchup on Tuesday, May 2
nd at 6:30 p.m. at Jaycees Field in Nacogdoches, Tx.
