HOUSTON –
Jessica Rabius,
Alex Piquart and
Krzysztof Turski all set new program records on day two of the Victor Lopez Classic on Saturday at Rice's Wendel D. Ley Track to lead the HCU track & field teams.
Rabius, a senior, bested her own record mark in the 1500 meters by more than four seconds, winning the race by more than nine seconds with a time of 4:18.69. In the men's 1500m, Turski improved on a record set by
Ben Drew last season with a time of 3:49.34, placing third. Piquart, meanwhile, won the men's 800 meters by one-hundredth of a second with a time of 1:49.46, improving on a previous record set by Daniel Shelton in 2017.
In the men's long jump,
Destiny Nkeonye earned an event win with a PR jump of 7.42m/24-4.25 while
Yassin Salem also posted a PR mark of 7.10m/23-3.50. In the women's long jump,
Noa Grochowski leapt 6.05m/19-10.25 for a PR and a third-place finish, second among collegians.
Reem Tammam placed fifth overall in the event with a mark of 5.94m/19-6.0.
Rebecca Pecora placed first in the women's high jump, clearing 1.68m/5-6.0. In the women's triple jump, Tammam placed third overall, second among collegians, with a jump of 12.46m/40-10.50.
Garrett Gibson ran the 400-meter hurdles in 52.65 to place second while freshman
Denzel Hinds finished right behind him in third with a PR time of 52.90. In the 110-meter hurdles, he ran a time of 13.99 to place fourth.
In the throws, newcomer
Liza Lap posted a top mark of 42.44m/139-3 in the women's discus and
Tjalle-Durk van der Eems recorded a top throw of 55.05m/180-7 in the javelin.
Next up on the HCU schedule is the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, running from Wednesday through Saturday, Mar. 29 through Apr. 1.
