SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Huskies fall in conference opener, 7-3, against UIW in 11
th inning at Daniel Sullivan Field.
The Huskies (2-19) were led by senior first baseman
Tyler LaRue who went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a homerun. Freshman rightfielder
Damian Ruiz went 1-for-3 with a triple, a run, and a walk while senior designated hitter
Parker Edwards went 1-for-3 with a run and a walk. Freshman leftfielder
Trent Baker went 1-for-5 with a single.
Graduate student righthander
Walker Zander (0-4) took the loss, giving up three earned runs and five hits on six walks and five strikeouts in 8.2 innings of relief for HCU. Junior righthander
Rye Gunter started the game for the Huskies pitching two innings while giving up three earned runs on four hits, one walk, and three strikeouts.
The Huskies got on the board in the top of the sixth inning when
Damian Ruiz tripled to right center scoring
Parker Edwards. HCU tied the game in the top of the eighth inning when
Tyler LaRue hit a two-run home run with two outs on a 2-2 count, scoring Ruiz.
UIW (11-11) were led by Rey Mendoza who went 2-for-6 with five RBIs, a home run, and two strikeouts. Matt Crump went 3-for-4 with a double, a run, and a walk while Hernan Yanez went 2-for-5 with a run and a walk.
Steve Hayward (3-1) earned the win, pitching four innings of relief for the Cardinals with two unearned runs on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Kayden Cassidy started the game for UIW pitching 5.2 innings giving up one earned run with two hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts.
The Cardinals got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Warren Laster homered scoring Matt Crump. UIW added another run in the bottom of the third inning when Rey Mendoza singled to center field scoring Alec Carr. The Cardinals hit a walk off grand slam in the bottom of the 11
th inning off the bat of Mendoza scoring Jimmy De Leon, Hernan Yanez and Wilson Ehrhardt.
The Huskies will play game two of the three-game series on Saturday, March 25
th at 2 p.m. at Daniel Sullivan Field in San Antonio, Tx.
