BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Two program records fell and HCU earned a pair of silver medals on day one of the Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex on Sunday.
 
The Huskies' men's and women's distance medley relay teams each earned silver medals with the men setting a new program record. The men's relay team of Alex Piquart, Travis Jacobs, Krzysztof Turski and Justice Artisst missed out on the gold by less than half a second with a time of 9:55.14, improving on the previous program record by more than six seconds.
 
Sophomore Rebecca Pecora picked up five points for the Huskies with a fourth-place finish in the pentathlon while senior Noa Grochowski placed sixth, earning three team points. Pecora set a new PR with 3,604 points while Grochowski's 3,361 points were also a PR.
 
Pecora started with 758 points from a time of 9.76 in the 60 meter hurdles followed by 903 points from a 1.74m/5-8.50 mark in the high jump. She set a new PR of 8.86m/29-1.0 in the shot put for 455 points followed by 720 points from a long jump of 5.57m/18-3.25 and finished with a PR of 2:24.12 in the 800 meters for 769 points.
 
Grochowski, meanwhile, ran 9.49 in the 60 for a new PR and 810 points followed by 795 points in the high jump, clearing 1.65m/5-5.0. She then threw 8.62m/28-3.50 in the shot put for 440 points, leapt 5.68m/18-7.75 in the long jump to add 753 to her total before finishing up with a PR of 2:40.86 in the 800 meters, picking up 563 points.
 
Sophomore Destiny Nkeonye earned a point for the men, placing eighth in the long jump with a top mark of 7.07m/23-2.50. Domen Sadic tied for sixth in the pole vault, clearing a top height of 4.55m/14-11.0 to pick up 2.5 team points. In the women's long jump, freshman Reem Tammam just missed the podium with a top jump of 5.74m/18-10.0 to place fourth while Meike Verdaasdonk leapt 5.69m/18-8.0 to finish sixth. The two combined for eight points.
 
Brianna Hinds advanced to the 60 meter hurdles finals, placing second in her heat with a PR time of 8.91. In the men's 60h prelims, senior Garrett Gibson won his heat with the fastest time of the day, finishing in 7.92 as the only runner to run under eight seconds.
 
In the men's mile prelims, Alex Piquart won his heat to qualify for tomorrow's finals with the second-fastest time of the day, 4:19.88. Nate Allen also qualified for the finals, finishing in 4:21.40. Freshman Eline Mast won her heat in the women's 800 meters, posting a time of 2:16.41 for the third-fastest time of the prelims. Travis Jacobs and Krzysztof Turski placed one and two in the men's 800m prelims with times of 1:53.79 and 1:54.22, respectively, earning spots in tomorrow's finals.
 
Denzel Hinds set a new program record in the men's 400 meters with a time of 48.80, improving upon a record set last season by Garrett Gibson. Hinds placed 10th in the prelims to just miss out on qualifying for the finals.
 
The second and final day of the 2023 SLC Indoor Championships are set to start at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 27, morning.
