SB: Huskies Run Win Streak to Five

HCU defeats Toledo and Manhattan

YOUNGSVILLE, La. – Day two of the Mardi Gras Mambo saw the HCU softball team ride a float in a Mardi Gras parade and then go on to defeat Toledo, 7-4, and Manhattan, 8-0, to make it five wins in a row on Saturday at the Youngsville Sports Complex.
 
Game 1
 
The Huskies (8-2) fell behind after Toledo pushed across two runs in the bottom of the first in game one of the day. In the top of the third, Riley Martin led off with a single to center and advanced around to third on a pair of groundouts. Kaicey Hagler then came through with a two-out RBI single to score Martin.
 
Avery Drake reached on an error to open the top of the fifth followed by a bunt single from AB Garcia. Hagler drew a walk to load the bases and then Jasie Roberts brought Drake home with a groundout to third. Haylie Savage brought home two more runs with a double to center while Maggie Childs and Martin each drove in runs in the inning to put HCU ahead, 6-2.
 
Toledo scored a run in the bottom of the fifth but the Huskies answered in the top of the sixth. Garcia tripled to get things started and then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hagler to keep the HCU lead at four, 7-3. The Rockets got one more run in the sixth but Ronni Grofman kept it to a three-run game to earn the win in the circle.
 
Grofman threw the complete game for HCU, allowing just one earned run while striking out five, to move to 2-0.
 
Game 2
 
The Huskies got on the board in the top of the second with Savage and Childs scoring on a single by Jackie Jessup. HCU then put the game out of reach in the third with a six-run, five-hit inning. The Huskies earned an 8-0 five-inning win.
 
Lyndie Swanson picked up the win, allowing just one hit to the first batter she faced. Swanson moves to 3-1 for the season, striking out five in five innings.
 
Savage finished the day with five hits and three runs scored while Garcia had four hits three runs scored. Hagler also recorded four hits and had three RBI.
 
The Huskies wrap up the Mardi Gras Mambo on Sunday, Feb. 20, morning at 9:00 a.m. against St. Thomas (MN).
