YOUNGSVILLE, La. – In the HCU softball team's final game at the Mardi Gras Mambo, held at the Youngsville Sports Complex, the Huskies dropped a 4-3 decision in six innings due to a drop-dead time for St. Thomas (MN) to be able to leave in time to make the team's flight home.
The game moved at a brisk pace with neither team scoring until the sixth inning and just one runner reaching second base between the two teams combined through the first five. The Tommies finally got to HCU (8-3) starter
Katy Janes in the sixth, pushing across four runs on five hits.
Trailing by four,
Jackie Jessup and
Riley Martin started the Huskies' half of the inning with back-to-back singles to right. The two then advanced on a wild pitch and with one out,
AB Garcia brought Jessup home on an error by the first baseman. Garcia stole second to give HCU runners on second and third and
Jasie Roberts came up with a clutch double to center to score a pair and make it a one run game, 4-3.
The seventh inning was underway when the drop dead time for the game hit, resulting in the 4-3 final in six innings.
Janes took the loss in the circle, falling to 3-1 for the season. She struck out five in six innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits. As a team, the Huskies finished with five hits. HCU ended the Mardi Gras Mambo with a 4-1 record.
HCU will be back in Houston this coming week with four games in four days at the University of Houston Tournament. The Huskies open play on Thursday, Feb. 23, against the host Cougars at 5:30 p.m. They will then play Pittsburgh on Friday, Feb. 24, Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 25, and Sam Houston on Sunday, Feb. 26.
