LUBBOCK, Texas – The HCU men's and women's track & field teams put up a strong showing in their final meet ahead of the Southland Conference Championships on Friday, earning multiple event wins and setting four new program records at the Texas Tech Matador Qualifier.
 
Senior Garrett Gibson broke his own record in the 60-meter hurdles prelims, winning his heat with a time of 7.93 to advance to the finals. In the finals, he bettered that mark with a time of 7.85 to take first place. Later in the meet, he broke his own 200 meters dash record with a time of 21.69.
 
In the women's 800 meters, senior Jessica Rabius improved on her own record with a race-winning time of 2:08.17. Rebecca Pecora broke the program record in the high jump with a mark of 1.76m/5-9.25 to win the event.
 
Alex Piquart placed second in the men's 800m, placing second with a PR time of 1:51.65 while Krzysztof Tuurski also posted a new PR, placing fourth with a time of 1:52.05. In the women's 60h, Brianna Hinds qualified for the finals with a time of 9.02 before finishing fifth in the finals with a time of 9.01.
 
Noa Grochowski won the women's long jump, leaping 5.87m/19-3.25 to win the event. Reem Tammam placed third, jumping 5.79m/19-0.0 while Meike Verdaasdonk jumped 5.74m/18-10.0 to place fourth and Pecora took fifth with a mark of 5.61m/18-5.0. Destiny Nkeonye placed fourth with a top jump of 7.14m/23-5.25.
 
HCU heads to Birmingham, Ala. for the 2023 Southland Conference Indoor Championships on Sunday, Feb. 26, and Monday, Feb. 27, at the Birmingham Crossplex.
