YOUNGSVILLE, La. – The HCU softball team won its opening two games at the Mardi Gras Mambo, held at the Youngsville Sports Complex, with a 3-1 win over Florida A&M and a 3-2 win over Gardner-Webb on a chilly Friday.
Game 1
HCU (6-2) threatened in the bottom of the second with
Jasie Roberts drawing a leadoff walk before stealing second. She moved up to third on a one-out groundout but was left stranded on a two-out groundout. It was the bottom of the fourth when the Huskies got on the board with Roberts reaching on a one-out single.
Autumn Sydlik followed that up with a triple to bring Roberts all the way around. Sydlik then came home and
Haylie Savage reached on a fielding error by the left-fielder.
Maggie Childs drew a walk to put runners on first and second. They moved up a base each on a
Jackie Jessup groundout and then
Tabitha Burnett drove home Savage on a two-out infield single.
Lyndie Swanson held the Rattlers at bay, giving up one lone run in the top of the sixth. Neriah Lee reached on an error to lead things off and then advanced to third on a single down the right field line. She then scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly. The Rattlers put their first two runners on in the seventh but Swanson got out of that to hold on for the win.
Swanson threw even innings, along one unearned run on four hits while striking out five and walking one. The junior improved to 2-1 on the season and lowered her ERA to 0.49.
Game 2
In game two, the Huskies edged out the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs 3-2. HCU did its damage with the top of the order in the bottom half of the first inning.
Avery Drake,
AB Garcia, Savage and Roberts all hit consecutive singles to start the attack and push runners across with run number three coming on a Sydlik groundout. With a 3-0 lead after the first, pitcher
Katy Janes allowed just a pair of unearned runs in the third.
Janes' record in the circle runs to 3-0 with the win, striking out four batters while allowing two hits.
Burnett went 2-for-3 in game one with an RBI while Savage finished game two with a pair of hits and a run scored.
HCU will face Toledo and Manhattan on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
