HOUSTON – HCU hosts Texas Southern on Wednesday afternoon at Husky Field at 4:00 p.m. for the Huskies' softball home opener and one of just two non-conference games on the team's 2023 schedule.
The Huskies (3-2) had a solid opening weekend, out-scoring opponents 23-10 in five games at the ULM Best on the Bayou Classic. The HCU pitching staff boasts a combined ERA of just 0.88 with a K/BB ratio of 3.3. Junior
Katy Janes led the staff with two complete game victories and sports a miniscule 0.50 ERA in 14 innings of work.
Offensively, the Huskies lead the Southland in extra base hits with 12 and junior
Kaicey Hagler's five leads all player in the league. Hagler finished the tournament with three doubles, one triple and one home run. Sophomore
AB Garcia leads the team with a .571 batting average and is a perfect 3-for-3 on stolen base attempts while junior
Avery Drake leads the conference with four stolen bases on four attempts.
TSU (0-5) dropped five games at the McNeese Cowgirl Classic last weekend. Through five games, the Tigers are batting .111 as a team and managed just two runs in their five games against McNeese, Idaho State and UAB. Senior Jazmine Dodd leads the team with a .375 batting average. In the circle, the Tigers own an ERA of 8.78.
The Huskies have won the last three meetings with the Tigers, most recently earning a 3-2 home win last season on Feb. 15. Junior
Lyndie Swanson earned the win in that game, pitching 2.2 innings in relief and Garcia finished 2-for-3 and scored a run.
After Wednesday's game, HCU will travel to Youngsville, La. for the Mardi Gras Mambo taking place from Friday, Feb. 17, through Sunday, Feb. 19. The Huskies will play Florida A&M and Gardner-Webb on Friday, Toledo and Manhattan on Saturday, and St. Thomas (MN) on Sunday.
