COMMERCE, Texas – HCU women's soccer will hit the road for a Friday evening matchup at Texas A&M-Commerce before returning home to take on Northwestern State at Sorrels Field on Sunday afternoon.
HCU (3-7, 1-3 SLC) suffered a pair of hard-luck defeats at home last weekend, falling in a pair of one-goal losses in which the Huskies out-shot their opponents, 44-12. Senior
Evelyn Slaughter scored her first goal of the season this past Sunday in the team's 2-1 loss to McNeese.
Through four games in Southland Conference play, the Huskies are averaging greater than five shots attempts more per game than any other school in the league and lead the conference with 9.25 shots on goal per game. Sophomore
Alexa Huerta continued to lead the team with four goals while
Lauren Avila,
Xya Balderas and
Alexia Murillo are all tied for the team lead with two assists.
Texas A&M-Commerce (6-5-1, 4-0-0 SLC) has won five-straight matches and stands tied atop the conference standings. The Lions have scored at least two goals in all four of their league games thus far with freshman forward Hannah Bell leading the conference with four goals in SLC play and seven on the season. Sophia Dean and Gillian McKenzie have split time in goal, combining for a .671 save percentage and allowing 2.17 goals per game.
The Lady Demons (4-7, 2-2 SLC) have lost their last two games, at Texas A&M-Commerce and at home to McNeese, and will travel to Beaumont, Texas to face Lamar on Friday before Sunday's game in Houston. Goals have been tough to come by for NSU with just eight in 11 games but sophomore Taylor Spitzer leads the way with four goals scored, including two in SLC matches. Junior Libe Banuelos has seen the lion's share of the minutes at goalkeeper and is second in the SLC with 3.91 saves per game.
Last season, A&M-Commerce won both meetings over the Huskies while HCU took a 1-0 victory on the road in Natchitoches, La. in the team's lone matchup with Northwestern State.
Following Sunday's game, the Huskies will be on the road for three-in-a-row beginning on Friday, Oct. 13, with a visit to Hammond, La. to face Southeastern.
