MSOC: Two matches at Sorrels close out regular season for Huskies

HCU hosts Liberty on Thursday then Chicago State for "Senior Day" on Sunday

HCU vs. CHICAGO STATE
The final week of the regular season brings two home contests to Sorrels Field, as Houston Christian University welcomes Liberty and Chicago State on Thursday and Sunday. The Huskies will be looking to avenge losses to both as they make their final push towards the OVC Tournament. Six men will be playing for their final times this week on Fondren Road, and they will be recognized on Sunday against Chicago State, with "Senior Day" preceding the matinee. 

HCU split a pair of matches last week, defeating UIW at home 3-1 on Thursday before dropping a 3-2 decision in the Windy City to Chicago State.

The Huskies, now 4-7-4 overall and 2-3-3 in OVC play, still sit fifth in the OVC table on nine points, just a point ahead of the tie in sixth between Chicago State and Eastern Illinois. The top six teams qualify for the inaugural OVC Tournament, to be held in Edwardsville.

Sophomore D'Alessandro Herrera continues to lead the charge for the HCU offense. He is currently tied for fourth in the league in goals with six, tied for second with six assists, and pacing the OVC in total points with 18. He is currently fifth in the league in total shots taken with 30. 

Freshman Ryan Okerayi is tied for fourth in the OVC in goals with four and his 14 points ranks him tied for fifth. Freshman Ricardo Garcia is second on the club with four assists, which is tied for sixth in the league. and third in points with seven. Each were named to the Top Drawer Top 100 Freshmen List earlier in the week.

Sam Zeeman as the stalwart of the Huskies defensive effort, having missed just one minute of action in 16 matches thus far, while contributing a goal and three assists from out of the back.

Alex Aitken is first in the OVC in saves with 56 and also ranks first in the league in saves per game (4.67) and second in save percentage (.709).

On October 1, the Huskies and Flames met for the first time ever, with Liberty coming out with a 3-1 result.

The men from Lynchburg (9-5-1 overall / 4-3-1 OVC) were the preseason conference favorite and currently sit in a tie for second with Lindenwood on 13 points. Luke Eberle continues to fan the Flame offense, as he is first in the league in goals with seven and second in points with 17. Michael Huss and Gabe Findlay are both tied for sixth in the league with five goals, with Huss third in the OVC in shots per game at 2.20. 

Leo Conneh, who was the third and final OVC player selected on the  Top Drawer Top 100 Freshmen list, is first in the conference in assists with seven. 

Sunday afternoon will be "Senior Day" for HCU, with a pregame recognition of Aldo Tarantini, Bangelee Sesay, Victor Velasco, Kharrel Medza, Jorge Mandujano and Zack Nicolaou. The Huskies and Cougars will be meeting for just the third time ever, but for the second straight Sunday. The Cougars claimed a 3-2 win this past Sunday, scoring three in the first half and staving off HCU down the stretch.

CSU is led by Iann Topete, who is tied for the league lead in goals scored with seven. Donat Juhasz is second in the league with six assists, while Lucas Fontana mans the woodwork and is third in both saves (51) and saves per game (3.40).

Both matches will be available on ESPN+ and via LIVE STATS.

The first-ever Ohio Valley Conference Tournament is set for November 5-11 in Edwardsville, Illinois. The top six teams qualify for the tournament, with the top team in each pod gaining a bye in the first round. The pods were determined by this years league schedule, with teams who played each other twice being in the same pod. HCU's pod includes Incarnate Word, Liberty and Chicago State. 

Regular-season champion SIUE is the only school locked into a seed (first), and are looking to finish off a perfect conference slate this week playing at Lindenwood and home to EIU.
