MSOC: HCU falls to OVC preseason favorite Liberty 3-1

Herrera nets 5th goal of the season as Huskies finish first OVC road trip

LYNCHBURG, Va. —- HCU gave OVC preseason favorite Liberty all it could handle Sunday afternoon before falling 3-1 to the Flames at Osborne Stadium.

A Luke Eberle goal with just under four minutes gone put the Huskies down 1-0 early, and the league's leading goal-scorer would connect again in the 15th minute to put HCU in a two-goal hole.

In the 27th minute, D'Alessandro Herrera played Ethan Giwa-McNeil running through the middle, and he was taken down in the box to earn a penalty. Herrera slid his shot from the spot just off the hands of Liberty keeper Blake Franzen, pulling HCU to within one, 2-1.

The two teams would continue to battle hard in the second half. However, as the Huskies chased the equalizer, Liberty got a 71st minute score off the left foot of Gora Gora, putting the Flames back in front by two.

The two teams combined for 22 fouls, 13 by Liberty, in the physical contest. The Huskies led in shots taken 9-6 and had 11 corners to just four for the Flames (7-2-0, 2-0-0 OVC).

Giwa-McNeil had three shots for the Huskies, while Herrera had two and picked up his fifth goal of the season on the penalty kick.

The Huskies fall to 2-5-3 overall and 0-1-1 in OVC play. HCU will return home for a pair of conference contests later this week, hosting Southern Indiana on Thursday and Eastern Illinois on Sunday.
