MATHEWS, Louisiana – The Huskies claim top-5 finish at La Tour Intercollegiate hosted by Nicholls to cap off the fall schedule. After firing back-to-back rounds of six-under par, 282, to hold the team clubhouse lead after the 36-hole day one, HCU posted a 10-over par, 298, in the final round to finish 4
th place at LaTour Golf Club.
Brooks Pawlak, competing as an individual, went wire-to-wire to claim his first individual title as a Husky with a two-shot victory at eight-under par. The freshman opened the tournament with a five-under par, 67, to tie the lead before a three-under par, 69, in the second round gave him a two-shot lead. The Kingwood native carded a final round even-par, 72, to claim a two-shot victory over SFA's Jake Smelser. Pawlak made eight birdies and two eagles on day one and followed up with two birdies in the final round at the par-5, 3
rd hole, and the par-4, 15
th hole. This is the first individual title of the Husky program since Carlos Trevino won the 2016 Colin Montgomerie Invitational and the lowest score to par since Nicko Martinez shot nine-under par at the 2019 FAU Spring Championship. Pawlak tied the lead of the 57-player field with two eagles, finished fourth in the field in par-4 scoring average with a 3.93, two-under par, and finished tied for fourth in par-5 scoring average with a 4.33, eight-under par.
The Huskies team lineup was led by
Cooper New claiming his first top-10 of the season with a T-8
th place finish. New opened the tournament with an even-par, 72, and a three-under par, 69, to sit in a tie for 4
th place after 36-holes. The senior carded eight birdies on opening day and added four birdies in the final round en route to a two-over par, 74. The Comfort native made a birdie on his second hole of the day, the par-5, 3
rd hole, before adding another at the par-5, 7
th hole. New kept the momentum adding birdies at the par-4, 15
th hole, and the par-3, 17
th hole to close out the tournament at one-under par, seven-shots back.
After a career start to the tournament with a four-under par, 68, in the opening round,
Roy Barrera fired rounds of one-over par, 73, in the second round and three-over par, 75, in the final round. The sophomore recorded a team leading 11 birdies on day one and tacked on two more birdies in the final round at the par-5, 3
rd hole, and the par-5, 7
th hole. The Boerne native captured his best finish of the season in a tie for 12
th place at even-par.
Mason Napier opened the tournament with a career-best five under par, 67, in the first round and posted a two-over par, 74, in the second round. A four-over par, 76, in the final round earned the sophomore a T-18 finish at one-over par. The Paris native recorded 10 birdies and two eagles for the week with two birdies coming in the final round at the par-5, 3
rd hole, and the par-5, 13
th hole. Napier finished in a tie for second in the field in par-3 scoring average with a 2.92, one-under par average, and also finished tied for fourth in par-5 scoring average with a 4.33, eight-under par average.
Ben Caton posted an opening round five-over par, 77, including two birdies before bouncing back with a six-under par, 66, in the second round, the lowest round of the season by a Husky. The senior added four birdies in the final round, 13 birdies for the tournament, en route to a six-over par, 78, on the final day. The Scotland native carded birdies at the 3
rd, 7
th, 13
th, and 15
th holes in the final round to finish the tournament in a tie for 26
th place at five-over par.
Rounding out the Husky lineup,
Benjamin Dabos recorded rounds of three-over par, 75, and five over par, 77, on opening day. The freshman posted the lowest round of the Huskies in the final round with a one-over par, 73, including three birdies at the par-5, 7
th hole, the par-5, 13
th hole, and the par-4, 15
th hole. Dabos tallied seven birdies for the week finishing in a tie for 35
th place at nine-over par.
SFA came from behind to win the 2023 La Tour Intercollegiate team title at 13-under par. SLU claimed second place at seven-under par, six-shots back. New Orleans finished in third place at four-under par.
