HOUSTON – Seniors
Jessica Rabius and
Justice Artisst both set new program records on Friday with Rabius and
Rebecca Pecora posting event wins to lead the Huskies' track & field teams at the Houston Invitational on Friday at the Yeoman Fieldhouse.
Rabius, a week after setting a new school record in the 3,000 meters, won the women's mile with a time of 4:45.17 to improve her own previous program record by nearly five seconds. Freshman
Eline Mast placed second, finishing in 5:01.89. Artisst, meanwhile, broke an 11-year old record in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:20.58 to place fourth. That improves upon Matt Perri's record set in 2012.
Sophomore
Rebecca Pecora won the women's high jump with a PR jump of 1.74m/5-8.50, just a quarter inch shy of the program record. She also set an indoor PR in the long jump with a leap of 5.49m/18-0.25.
Destiny Nkeonye placed fifth in the men's long jump with a top jump of 7.07m/23-2.50. Freshman
Reem Tammam improved upon a solid leap from last week in the triple jump, improving on her mark by nine inches with a jump of 12.30m/40-4.25.
Yassin Salem placed fifth in the men's triple jump with a mark of 14.83m/48-8.0.
On the track,
Garrett Gibson won his prelims heat with a time of 8.16 to qualify for the finals. He then placed fourth in the finals, finishing in 8.04.
Denzel Hinds tied for fifth in the 400 meters, posting a PR time of 49.32 to improve upon his previous best by two tenths of a second. Junior
Alex Piquart placed second in the 800 meters, crossing the finish line in 1:53.82.
Krzysztof Turski finished fourth in 1:55.27. The men's 4x400 relay team of Gibson,
Mark Ngei, Hinds and
Zyyare Brown placed second overall with a time of 3:18.88.
The Huskies' next meet will be in two weeks on Friday, Feb. 10, when they head back to Yeoman Fieldhouse for the Howie Ryan Invitational.
