SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The 2022 HBU women's soccer season kicks off its campaign Thursday evening against UTSA at Park West Athletics Complex with a 7:00 p.m. start.
HBU's roster features 16 returning letterwinners and seven starters from last season. The Huskies landed four players on the preseason all-Southland Conference team with senior
Ryan Ford and junior
Katie Marker leading the way as first team selections. Senior
Talin Rizo and junior
Mia Salas were second team honorees.
Ford appeared in all 19 games, making 17 starts, last season and tied for the team-lead in assists (5) while ranking second on the squad in SLC play with nine points (2 goals, 5 assists). Marker led the team in points (11), with all of them coming in conference play for the third-best total in the league.
Rizo, back for a fifth season, has logged 5,296 minutes on the pitch for the Huskies and last season recorded a pair of assists. Salas led HBU in shot attempts last season and finished the year with two goals and two assists.
UTSA is coming off a 2021 season in which the Roadrunners finished fourth in the Conference USA West division with a record of 10-5-4, 3-2-3 CUSA. In two exhibition matches, the Roadrunners defeated Texas State, 3-2, and fell to Baylor, 2-1.
HBU is 2-5-1 all-time against UTSA with the two teams playing to a 1-1 draw last season in San Antonio.
Anna Briseno gave the Huskies an early lead with a 16
th-minute header before UTSA evened the score in the 62
nd minute. The two teams have historically played low-scoring matches against one another with the Huskies and Roadrunners scoring more than one goal in a game just once each.
The Huskies will have a week off before returning to action on Friday, Aug. 26, in Denton, Texas against North Texas followed by a visit to San Marcos, Texas to face Texas State.
