NATCHITOCHES, La. – HBU blew a close game open with a five-run rally in the eighth, then two more in the ninth to salvage the Southland Conference series finale with a 10-1 victory over Northwestern State Sunday afternoon at Brown-Stroud Field.
Junior shortstop
Diego Davila was 2-for-3 with a home run, an RBI and a run and junior designated hitter
Brennen Bales went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and scored twice for the Huskeis (15-26, 8-7 SLC). Senior first baseman
Jake Miller was 1-for-3 and drove in a pair, sophomore shortstop
Sebastian Trinidad homered and drove in two and junior catcher
Kevin Ortiz walked twice and scored twice.
Junior righthander
Matthew Charles (3-0) earned the win, allowing one run on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks in six innings.
Gray Rowlett was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Larson Fontenot was 1-for-3 with a double for the Demons (19-20, 8-7).
Drayton Brown (4-4) took the loss for NSU, giving up four runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and three walks in seven innings.
Davila homered to lead off the third, then senior second baseman
Braden Sanford followed with a single, stole second and scored on a pair of wild pitches to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.
The Demons cut the Huskies' lead to one on Rowlett's RBI double in the fifth.
HBU got the run back in the sixth when Bales doubled and scored on Miller's RBI single.
The Huskies loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth and got sacrifice flies from junior rightfielder
Logan Letney and Miller. Ortiz scored on a wild pitch, then Trinidad blasted a two-run homer to left – the first of his HBU career – to put the Huskies up, 8-1.
Bales and junior third baseman
Reed Chumley added RBI singles in the ninth.
The Huskies return to action when they host UIW in a three-game Southland Conference series Friday through Sunday at Husky Field.
