NATCHITOCHES, La. – Johnathan Harmon went the distance in hurling Northwestern State to a 4-2 win over HBU to clinch the Southland Conference series Saturday afternoon at Brown-Stroud Field.
Junior leftfielder
Caleb Munton was 1-for-4 with an RBI, while junior first baseman
Brennen Bales and junior shortstop
Diego Davila each went 1-for-4 and scored a run. Junior centerfielder
Austin Roccaforte walked twice and drove in a run for HBU (14-26, 7-7).
Senior righthander
Jared Burch (1-4) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 5.2 innings. Junior righthander
Chad Ricker allowed a run on a hit and struck out three in 2.1 innings of relief.
Larson Fontenot was 1-for-3 and drove in three runs for NSU (19-19, 8-6). Daunte Stuart went 2-for-3 and scored a run and Jeffrey Elkins went 1-for-3 and scored twice. Jake Haze went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and drove in a run.
HBU got on the board first on Roccaforte's RBI groundout in the third and Munton's RBI single in the fourth put the Huskies ahead 2-0.
NSU cut the deficit in half on Fontenot's RBI groundout in the bottom of the fourth, then took the lead on Fontenot's two-run single in the sixth. Haze added an RBI double in eighth to plate an insurance run for the Demons.
The series concludes with a 1 p.m. start Sunday.
