CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Every HBU batter recorded a hit and scored a run, while six had multiple hits and the Huskies had 18 overall in an 11-5 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to clinch the Southland Conference series Saturday afternoon at Chapman Field.
Senior leftfielder
Jake Miller went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs, while junior rightfielder
Logan Letney and senior second baseman
Braden Sanford each went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Huskies (13-23, 7-5 SLC). Junior shortstop
Diego Davila was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs and junior catcher
Kevin Ortiz was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and scored twice. Junior first baseman
Brennen Bales doubled and scored twice.
Junior righthander
Matthew Charles (2-0) earned the win, allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Tucker McEnroe was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run, whiel Steven Rivera-Chijin was 1-for-5 with two RBIs for the Islanders (17-20, 4-8). Cole Modgling and Tyler Linneweber each went 2-for-3.
Jaime Ramirez Jr. (1-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks in 2.2 innings.
The Huskies scored three in the first on an RBI double by Bales and a two-run single by Davila. Miller led off the third with a double, then Davila followed with an RBI triple and scored on Sanford's infield single to extend the lead to 5-0.
Miller and Letney each collected RBI singles in the fourth to put HBU ahead, 7-1.
The Islanders rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run single by Chijin, an RBI double by McEnroe and Tre Jones' RBI double to close the deficit to 7-5.
The Huskies answered with a run in the eighth on Miller's RBI double, then put the game away with a three spot in the ninth on junior centerfielder
Austin Roccaforte's RBI groundout and Ortiz's two-run single.
HBU returns to action with a pair of midweek matchups on the road, first against Houston on Tuesday, then Lamar on Wednesday, before hitting the road to face Northwestern State in a conference series next weekend.
