HOUSTON – The HBU softball team is set to host the Sam Houston Bearkats for a midweek game on Wednesday evening at Husky Field. Wednesday's game was originally scheduled to be a double header but due to weather the teams will now play a single game at 5:00 p.m. airing live on ESPN+.
The Huskies (12-19) are coming off of their first Southland Conference series win against the UIW Cardinals in San Antonio this past weekend.
Caitlyn Brockway hit over .700 in the series including a home run in game one, her sixth of the season.
Lyndie Swanson picked up two wins in the series, throwing two complete games with a complete game shutout in the opening game of the series.
Swanson has now totaled seven complete games in 15 appearances for HBU. Brockway leads the team in home runs with six and RBIs with 17.
Shelby Echols had another strong weekend and raised her batting average back up to an even .500 on the season with 48 hits in 96 at-bats. Along with leading the Husky offense in average, she also leads in doubles, triples, runs scored, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and has the fewest strikeouts among qualified hitters.
Sam Houston (10-31) has lost eight games in a row and has just one win in their last 22 games. Ellie Grill leads the Bearkat offense in hitting at .262 while Elia Hebel is the power bat in the lineup with seven homers. Mika Vento is the work horse of the Bearkat pitching rotation with a 3.11 ERA in 92.1 innings pitched. She also leads the staff in strikeouts with 53.
The Huskies and Bearkats have split the last four games they have faced each other, all coming in the 2021 season. Sam Houston took the most recent meeting 4-3 in an elimination game during the 2021 Southland Conference Tournament. The Bearkats have the better head-to-head record of the two schools at 25-6.
The Huskies open up a three game series with Texas A&M Corpus Christi this weekend. Friday's double header has been moved up to 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. The entire series can be watched live on ESPN+.
