BSB: Huskies Sweep DH Over #23 Sacramento State

Senior righthander Andrew Reitmeyer closes out both games

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – HBU shut down No. 23 Sacramento State to sweep a doubleheader by scores of 4-1 and 3-2 Saturday afternoon at John Smith Field.

In the first game, junior rightfielder Logan Letney went 2-for-2 and scored twice, while junior designated hitter Tyler LaRue went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Senior second baseman Jake Miller went 1-for-2 with a walk and scored twice.

Senior righthander Jared Burch took a no-decision, allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks in four innings. Junior Morris Austin (1-0) picked up the win, while senior Andrew Reitmeyer retired all four batters he faced, including a pair of strikeouts for the save.

Nick Iwasa went 3-for-4 and drove in the lone run for the Hornets.

Noah Lucchesi (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk in five innings. Ryan Fleming gave up two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks in two innings.

The Huskies struck first in the second, loading the bases, then getting a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Kevin Ortiz and junior Reed Chumley beating out a potential double play grounder for an RBI.

The Hornets scored in the fourth, when Trevor Doyle walked and scored from second on Iwasa's RBI single.

HBU put two more on the board in the sixth when Letney and Miller scored on LaRue's two-run single.

In the second game, junior catcher Parker Edwards blasted a three-run homer in the fourth for the Huskies' only runs of the game, but that would prove to be enough.

Junior shortstop Diego Davila went 2-for-3, Miller and junior first baseman Brennen Bales each singled and scored and senior centerfielder Lane Botkin tripled. Letney went 0-for-4 to see his seven-game hitting streak come to an end.

Junior righthander Ethan Abbott took a no-decision, allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 3.2 innings. Junior righthander Chad Ricker (1-1) picked up his first win, shutting the Hornets out on one hit with three strikeouts and a walk in 2.2 innings. Reitmeyer came on to get the final two outs, including a strikeout, for his second save of the day and his third of the season.

Gunner Gouldsmith went 2-for-2 and drove in a run, while Jorge Bojorquez went 1-for-3 and scored a run.

Colin Hunter (1-1) was pinned with the loss, allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeout and a walk in four innings.

Bales and Miller had back-to-back singles to lead off the fourth, then LaRue moved them over with a sacrifice bunt. After Chumley lined out, Edwards came through with the huge, two-out blast. Botkin followed with a triple, but was left at third.

Sacramento State answered in the bottom half of the inning as Bojorquez singled, Steven Moretto was hit by a pitch and Josh Rolling walked to load the bases with one out. After Josh Walker struck out, Carson Blatnick was hit by a pitch and Gouldsmith walked, both forcing in runs. Ricker came on and struck out Iwasa to strand the bases loaded.

The series concludes Sunday with a 1 p.m. CST start.
