Huskies look to get back on track against Cowgirls

LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana – Conference play rolls on for the HBU softball team as they travel to Louisiana to take on the Cowgirls of McNeese in a three-game series beginning with a single game Friday night before a double header Saturday afternoon at Joe Miller Field.
 
Friday's game can be viewed live on ESPN+ with the double-header airing on the McNeese Insider.
 
The Huskies (10-16, 0-3 SLC) ae looking to snap a seven game losing streak heading into McNeese. They are coming off of a midweek loss to former Southland foe and current WAC member Lamar. The Huskies won the first two meetings between the Cardinals early in the season before dropping the most recent contest.
 
Shelby Echols holds her batting average lead for HBU and has been top five in the nation for most of the season. Her average currently sits at .482. Caitlyn Brockway leads the Huskies with four home runs while Haylie Savage leads with 15 RBI's. As a team, the Huskies have been successful at swiping bags, having only been caught stealing twice in 19 attempts.
 
Lyndie Swanson (4-3) and Sarah Venker (1-6) are the go to arms for the Huskies, having thrown 55.3 and 53.0 innings respectively. Swanson leads the team in ERA at 2.77 and is tied with Venker in strikeouts with 42.
 
The Cowgirls (17-14, 3-0 SLC) opened Southland Conference play with a three game sweep of Texas A&M Corpus before winning a midweek game against UL-Monroe. Jil Poullard leads the Cowgirls in batting average at .362, home runs with three, and RBI's with 20. The Cowgirls have four girls hitting .280 and above and have six different players who have double digit RBI's.
 
Ashley Vallejo (7-6) leads the Cowgirls in the circle with a 3.01 ERA in her 79.0 innings of work. Over that time, she has struck out 61 and walked 22 while giving up 70 hits. Shaelyn Sanders is the Cowgirls ERA leader at 1.59 in 44.0 innings of work. The Cowgirls pitching staff is susceptible to the long ball, having given up 20 so far this season.
 
The Huskies midweek game against Prairie View A&M has been canceled, so the next time they take the field will be in San Antonio next weekend for a SLC matchup against the UIW C
