HOUSTON – The HBU softball team officially open up Southland Conference action with a three-game series against the Northwestern State Lady Demons beginning with a double-header Friday afternoon at Husky Field. The series will conclude with a single game on Saturday; all of the action can be watched live on ESPN+.
The Huskies (10-12) are coming off of a loss to the Texas A&M Aggies on Wednesday. After getting down 4-2 late in the game,
Caitlyn Brockway belted a two run shot in the top of the sixth inning to tie things up at four. The Aggies ended up walking that game off in the bottom of the seventh inning.
So far into the season,
Shelby Echols leads the Huskies in hitting at .528, leads in doubles with four, hits with 38, runs with 18, and is third in RBI's with 11. Echols, who was leading the nation in batting average prior to Wednesday's game, saw her school record hit streak come to an end at 20-games against the Aggies. Brockway leads HBU in home runs with four while
Haylie Savage leads in RBI's with 13.
Lyndie Swanson (4-2) leads the Huskies in the circle with a 2.60 ERA including four wins, 34 strikeouts, and three complete games over 43.0 innings pitched.
Sarah Venker is the ultimate utility player, having posted a 3.64 ERA for the Huskies over 50.0 innings pitched and is second on the team in hitting with a .283 average.
Katy Janes and
Madison Cotton have combined to strikeout 36 hitters over their 54.2 innings of work.
The Lady Demons (17-12) finished just one win better than the Huskies in 2021. Due to a cancellation, the last time they took the field was Saturday March 19
th in a loss against the Memphis Tigers in the Tiger Classic. While playing in the Tiger Classic they won three games against East Tennessee State and James Madison.
Bailie Ragsdale leads three Lady Demons' hitting over .300 at .368. Three Lady Demons' have hit five home runs, including Laney Roos who is hitting .360 and has driven in 24 runs. As a team, Northwestern State is hitting .278/.407/.750.
Maggie Darr has posted a 1.73 ERA for the Lady Demons in 60.2 innings of work. She has 79 strikeouts and has allowed only 48 hits and nine walks. Sage Hoover has thrown 59.2 innings and has a 2.93 ERA with 81 strikeouts.
The Huskies hit the road Tuesday for a midweek game against the Lamar Cardinals before traveling to Lake Charles to take on the McNeese Cowgirls in their second Southland Conference series of the season.
