NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – The women's basketball team won their most important game in program history to date on the back of a career high 20-point game from
Kennedy Wilson, Wednesday night in Lakefront Arena.
This win marks six consecutive games in the win column for the team. It was a night of many first for the Huskies, as head coach
Donna Finnie earned her 100
th career win with HBU, the Huskies clinched a share of the regular season conference title for the first time in program history, and Wilson reached the 20 point threshold for the first time in her career.
HBU (15-9, 11-2 SLC) jumped out to a quick start in this one, going on a 12-5 run over the first six minutes of the game. Following a made Privateers (3-17, 2-11 SLC) three pointer to open the game's scoring,
Abbey Sutherland responded with a made three before drawing a charge on HBU's next defensive possession. Wilson and Sutherland combined for 11 of the Huskies 19 first quarter points, one of their best offensive quarters as a unit of the season.
After the Privateers cut the lead down to four in the second quarter,
Lauryn Mapusua checked into the game for HBU and quickly made a layup and knocked down a catch-and-shoot three ball on a pass from
Kennedy Wilson on the right wing. HBU worked the lead back to nine before a made free throw from New Orleans with just seconds left in the half gave HBU a 34-26 lead heading into intermission.
UNO woke up on both side of the ball coming out of the break. They had one of their best quarters of the season, scoring 19 points on 50 percent shooting (9-18 FG) from the floor while holding HBU to just five points on 11 percent shooting (1-9 FG) including two made free throws. The Huskies found themselves in a hole, heading to the fourth down 45-39.
For the second week in a row the Huskies would prove no lead is safe when they are on the floor. Led on defense by
Julija Vujakovic and Sutherland, the Huskies would hold the Privateers bucket-less in the final period. New Orleans scored their only two points of the quarter from the foul line. Their first point of the period for UNO came with just under two minutes left in the game after the Huskies reclaimed the lead 50-45. Wilson and
Timia Jefferson each made a pair of free throws with just over a minute to play that iced the game for the Huskies. HBU would walk away victorious 56-47, sweeping the season series against the Privateers.
For the game Wilson led all scorers with her career high 20 points followed by Jefferson with 12. Vujakovic had eight points and seven rebounds while
Marilyn Nzoiwu cleaned up the glass for HBU with 11 boards. Sutherland stuffed the stat sheet and made her presence felt on the defensive end with seven points, five rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.
DeArica Pryor led New Orleans with 12 points and seven rebounds while also dishing out two assists.
"That was a tough win. Keeshawn has her team playing so tough now so I was glad we found a way!
Kennedy Wilson was outstanding and I thought our players who came in off the bench all did a great job today," Finnie said after the game. "We are already thinking about Saturday as we have a tough game against an in form McNeese team who are playing very well. Please get out to Sharp at 2 p.m. to honor our two seniors,

The Huskies will clinch the best record in the Southland Conference with a win at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon when they host McNeese for Senior Day in Sharp Gym.
