HOUSTON – The HBU softball team is welcoming the UTSA Roadrunners to town for some mid-week softball action at 5 p.m. Tuesday night at Husky Field. The game will air live on ESPN+.
The Huskies (6-5) are coming off of three wins in three games in the Houston tournament. They beat Lamar twice in two slugfests that totaled 39 runs between the teams.
Lyndie Swanson closed out the tournament throwing a complete game shutout against the Cougars late Sunday evening.
Shelby Echols has been on a tear to open the season for the Huskies. Over their first 11 contests she is hitting .571 she has racked up a team high 20 hits, including three doubles and a home run. She also leads HBU with nine runs driven in and with 10 runs scored. Other notable hitters include
Sarah Venker who is hitting .333 with five hits and a home run and has an OPS of 1.141.
Caitlyn Brockway leads the team in home runs with two while
Jasie Roberts lone home run on the year came in walk-off fashion last weekend. HBU has been successful when trying to steal baes so far this year, converting on 11 of 12 attempts.
Lyndie Swanson and
Katy Janes have each picked up three wins on the season in the circle for the Huskies. Swanson (3-1, 3.54) has thrown two complete game shutouts and has 22 strikeouts over 32.1 innings pitched. Janes (3-2, 6.70) has appeared in 15.2 innings for HBU totaling 15 strikeouts. Venker and
Madison Cotton have combined for 20 strikeouts over 27 innings.
UTSA (3-9) recently played in the Texas Classic where they faced off against some of the toughest teams in the country. They lost to the 22
nd overall ranked Arizona State Sun Devils 7-4 before dropping a game against the host team, 23
rd ranked Texas Longhorns 8-0.
Erykah Guerrero leads the Roadrunners hitting .321 with Kat Ibarra right behind her at .281. UTSA has three hitters each tied for the home run lead with two and two tied in the RBI lead for eight. Marena Estell leads UTSA in the circle with a 4.18 ERA on the season.
This will be the first time the two schools have met since the 2020 season, a game which saw UTSA win 6-2 in San Antonio. The Roadrunners lead the overall series 7-4 but have split the last four contests with the Huskies dating back to the 2015 season.
