HOUSTON – HBU Softball travels across town to take part in the University of Houston tournament on Saturday and Sunday at the Cougar Softball Complex.
The Huskies (3-5, 0-0 SLC) will play in another round robin style tournament this weekend, this time against UH (4-6) and Lamar (2-8) on Saturday and Sunday. Both games the Huskies play against the Cougars can be seen live on ESPN+. Live stats throughout the tournament can be found on HBUHuskies.com
HBU is coming out of the Southern Miss Invitational which saw them finish 1-3, picking up a win against Mississippi Valley State. So far this season,
Shelby Echols leads HBU with a .500 average, including 11 hits and a double in 22 at-bats.
Ab Garcia follows her with a .333 average with eight hits in 24 at-bats.
Caitlyn Brockway has the lone Husky home run on the season while
Autumn Sydlik leads with five runs batted in. In the circle,
Lyndie Swanson leads the Huskies in wins and innings pitched, putting together a 2-1 record over 24.2 innings pitched while striking out 20.
Sarah Venker has a 2.76 earned run average, having given up five runs in 13.2 innings of work.
Players to watch for the Cougars include LA Matthews who is hitting .458 over 24 at-bats knocking in five runs. Five different Cougars have gone yard, including Becca Schulte and Kati Ray Brown who have two round-trippers each. Kenna Wilkey and Megan Lee each have two wins for UH while Wilkey leads the team with 18 strikeouts.
The Lamar Cardinals have just three hitters batting above .200. Audrey Fleming has all three homers for the Cardinals. Aaliyah Ruiz has both wins for Lamar, and has 24 strikeouts in 36.2 innings of work.
HBU has won all three games they have played against Lamar. The two schools met for a three game series last season, which saw the Huskies outscore the Cardinals, 18-3. This will be the first time in school history that the Huskies and Cougars will face off.
Following the UH Tournament, the Huskies will return home for a mid-week game against UTSA before hosting a round-robin style tournament of their own against the likes of Brown and Prairie View A&M.
