HATTIESBURG, MS – The HBU softball team travels to Mississippi to take part in the Southern Miss Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
 
This round-robin style tournament features ULM, Jacksonville State, Mississippi Valley State, and host Southern Miss. Each game will be broadcast live on CUSA TV and live stats will be available through the softball schedule page on HBUHuskies.com.
 
The Huskies will play double-headers on Friday and Saturday morning before heading back to Houston. They face off with ULM at 10:00 a.m. Friday morning before facing Jacksonville State at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. Saturday they take on Mississippi State Valley in 8:00 a.m. game before facing the host team, Southern Miss, at 11 a.m.
 
HBU (2-2) is coming off of a late inning victory in their home opening win against the Texas Southern Tigers. Caitlyn Brockway sent a sixth inning blast over the center field fence at Husky field in the bottom of the sixth inning the give the Huskies the lead 3-2. Lyndie Swanson came back out for the top of the seventh to shut down the Tigers and earn her second win on the young season.
 
So far into the season, Shelby Echols leads the team, hitting .500 with an OPS of 1.056. Brockway leads the team in homers with one and RBI's with three. Sarah Venker and Swanson lead the HBU staff. Venker has recorded 13 strikeouts through 8.2 innings pitched and has a 1.62 ERA. She has not recorded a win or a loss in two appearance (one start). Swanson has tallied 16 strikeouts through 14.1 innings and has recorded both of the Huskies wins in three appearances.
 
ULM (5-0) has gone unbeaten this far into the season, and opened the season up with a win against Mississippi Valley State. Lourdes Bacon and Ashlan Ard lead the Warhawks hitting .500. Two players are tied for a team high one home run and six RBI's. ULM has a team ERA of 1.40 and a WHIP of just .90. All five pitchers who have made an appearance have a 1-0 record.
 
Jacksonville State (3-2) split their first four games and are coming off of a win against Mississippi Valley State. Brantley Bonds leads the Gamecocks in batting average at .588 with 10 hits in 17 at-bats, home runs with 3, and RBI's with 12. JSU has five qualified hitters hitting .333 or above and two hitting over .500. Kat Carter leads the pitching staff with a 2.06 ERA in 17.0 innings with a 1-1 record.
 
Mississippi Valley State (0-5) is winless in the early portion of the season, dropping games to Syracuse, ULM, and JSU. Sydney Wesley leads the team in hitting with a .429 average, one home run, and two RBI's.
 
Southern Miss (2-3) won their first two games of the season before dropping three in a row, including splitting games with Northern Alabama. Hannah Borden leads the Golden Eagles in hitting, with a .429 average with a double and a home run. Tata Davis leads with eight RBI's and is second on the team in hits with five. Morgan Leinstock leads the staff with a 1-1 record and a 3.05 ERA with 16 strikeouts through 18.1 innings pitched.
 
The Huskies return to Houston next weekend when they travel across town to take part in the UH Tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
