SB: Huskies Host Texas Southern in Home Opener

Huskies have won four 11 of 14 games against TSU

HBU Huskies (1-2) vs. Texas Southern Tigers (0-5)
Tuesday, February 15th – 5 p.m.
Husky Field

HOUSTON – The HBU softball team is set to host the Texas Southern Tigers in their 2022 home opener at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday night.

The game will air live on ESPN+ with the call from Rodney Sidlik. Live stats of the game can be followed along at HBUHuskies.com

Last weekend, the Huskies traveled an hour north to take part in the Bearkat Classic, a tournament featuring teams from all over the country including Wichita State, Dayton, UTSA, South Dakota and Sam Houston.

The Huskies won their opening game of the season on a complete-game shutout from Lyndie Swanson. They dropped their second game to South Dakota to close out day one of play.

Unfortunately, weather rolled into Huntsville late Saturday morning and pushed the schedule back for the rest of the day. The Huskies were scheduled to play a double header including the night cap against Sam Houston, but that game ended up being canceled.

On the season, Haylie Savage leads qualified Huskies in batting average, hitting .333 with three hits in nine at-bats. Ab Garcia is close behind, hitting .300 with three hits in 10 at-bats.

The Tigers (0-5) have lost five straight to open up the season, most recently to Southland foe McNeese Cowgirls. Julia Bilbao and Tamera McKnight each had two-hit performance for TSU. Naomi Reyes picked up her second loss on the season, giving up seven runs (six earned), on six hits, a walk, and two strikeouts over six innings pitched.

This will be the 15th time these two schools have battled on the diamond, with the Huskies winning the last two matchups and 11 overall. This will be the first time the schools have faced since a double-header in the 2019 season.

This will be the lone Husky game at Husky Field until March, as they travel to Southern Mississippi next weekend to take part in the Southern Miss invitational.
