HOUSTON – The HCU women's basketball team signed forward Hannah Fields from Norman, Oklahoma, head coach
Donna Finnie announced Wednesday morning. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.
The Oklahoma native played high school ball for Norman North High School and head coach Alfred Beal. She lettered all four years there and was a starter for two seasons. She packed the stat sheet her junior season when she averaged 11.2 points per game, 6.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game. She shot 40 percent from behind the three-point line and 70 percent from the charity stripe. As a freshman and junior she was named an Academic State Champion. Coach Beal is thrilled for Hannah and the opportunity she has in front of her.
"Hannah Fields is one of the hardest working, most competitive players I have ever had the pleasure to coach. She is also a 'team-first' player. Hannah does whatever it takes to support the team," he said. "HCU is getting a great player, but an even better person."
Fields plays her club basketball for Team Trae Young and is coached by Frankie Parks. Her team finished 2nd on the 3SSB Circuit.
Fields was born to parents David and Jamie Fields. Her father, David, played college basketball for the University of the Ozarks She has one sibling, brother Luke (19). She chose HBU for the connections she made with everyone on campus throughout her recruiting.
"Besides the great balance of athletics and academics, I chose to attend HCU because of the coaches and people. The atmosphere of the team is very refreshing and building relationships was a priority. It was evident the coaches care about the whole player on and off the court," Fields said. "The players have come here from all over the world making HCU an awesome place to make lifelong friends."
Coach Finnie is ecstatic to add another high energy player to her roster.
She said, "Hannah blew me away with her defensive intensity when she attended our elite camp. She didn't take one possession off and her consistent intensity is tremendous on the defensive end of the floor. She is very versatile offensively too and a tough player. She's one that I don't doubt would do whatever it takes to help her team win." Finnie also noted how well she thinks Hannah will fit into the HCU community. "In addition, she's also an incredible student and will be a huge addition to our campus. We are thrilled that the Fields family are Huskies."
Fields will join the Huskies for the 2023-24 season.
