NATCHITOCHES, La. – HCU women's soccer closed the regular season on a high note to head into the 2022 Southland Conference Soccer Tournament as the fourth seed, facing fifth-seeded Southeastern in the opening game of the three-round tournament on Wednesday afternoon at the NSU Lady Demon Soccer Complex. Houston Christian University (HCU), formerly Houston Baptist University (HBU), underwent a name change in September 2022.

The Huskies (6-9-3, 6-5-1 SLC) ended the regular season with a 2-1 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to earn the No. 4 seed while relegating the Islanders to the No. 6 seed. As a result, HCU faces a Southeastern Lady Lions (7-6-3, 5-4-3 SLC) team the Huskies defeated twice during the regular season.

HCU out-scored the Lady Lions 6-1 across two matches with a 4-1 win at home and a 2-0 shutout in Hammond, La. In those two games, redshirt freshman Emily Jaimes scored three times while junior Mia Salas had two goals and an assist. The HCU defense limited Southeastern to single-digit shot attempts in both matches while goalkeeper Chloe Bagshaw made seven saves on eight chances.

Junior Katie Marker led the Huskies with five goals in the regular season to go along with one assist for a team-leading 11 points. Salas was second on the team with eight points on three goals and two assists, all of which came in conference play. In goal, Bagshaw totaled six shutouts with a .744 save percentage.

The Lady Lions are led by senior midfielder Mya Guillory who recorded six goals and five assists on the year while Makenzie Maher and Kelsey Fuller each added three goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Griffin played the majority of minutes in goal, finishing with a goals against average of 1.25 and a save percentage of .760.

The Huskies are 10-3-2 all-time against Southeastern and have won the last three meetings.
