CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – In a game scheduled just one day in advance after five game cancelations due to health and safety protocols, the HBU women's basketball team dropped their last non-conference game of the season against the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, 61-56, Wednesday night in the Dugan Wellness Center.
The Huskies (4-7, 0-0 SLC) came out fast in the first quarter before cooling down on offense in the second quarter. The Huskies' jumped out to a quick 16-9 lead in the first quarter, before being outscored 18-9 in the second quarter. The Islanders opened the first quarter hot from the field, jumping out to a 7-2 lead before the Huskies closed the quarter on a 14-2 run. The Islanders took a 27-25 lead into halftime.
The second half was tightly contested, as the Islanders outscored the Huskies, 17-16, in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Huskies were unable to get over the hump to regain the lead in the final period. Instead, the Islanders held off the Huskies, 17-15, down the stretch to win by a five-point margin.
Marilyn Nzoiwu led the Huskies in rebounds, and nearly earned another double-double on the year, scoring nine points and collecting the second-most rebounds of her career with 17.
Timia Jefferson came off of the bench and dropped 19 points, including a perfect 8-8 shooting from the foul line.
The Islanders (6-6, 0-0 SLC) were led by Nabaweeyah McGill, who scored a career-high 18 points and a double-double from Alecia Westbrook who posted 11 points and 15 boards.
For the game, the Huskies shot 35 percent from the field, while they allowed 43 percent shooting from the Islanders. The Huskies shot 40 percent from distance, while the Islanders missed the only shot they took from deep.
This was the Huskies' last game before Southland Conference play officially begins. They tip-off conference play on Jan. 15 when they hit the road to take on McNeese.
