T&F: Huskies Wrap Day One at Texas A&M Team Invitational

Multis athletes shine on day one

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The HBU multis athletes competing in the decathlon and heptathlon led the way for the Huskies' track & field teams on Friday at the Texas A&M Team Invitational.
 
Kaitlin Smith closed day one of the heptathlon with 3,522 points, more than 300 points ahead of where she stood at the end of day one at the 93rd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays last month. The senior finished the Texas Relays with a program record total of 5,291. Smith opened with 1,074 points from the 100 meter hurdles, running a wind-aided PR of 13.34. She then set new PR marks in the next two events, clearing 1.73m/5-8.0 in the high jump, reaching 11.32m/37-1.75 in the shot put. She then ran a wind-aided 24.42 in the 200 meters.
 
In the decathlon, the two Huskies competing finished in the top two in all five events of the day and stand first and second after day one. Denim Rogers leads the way with 4,005 points while Scott Boon stands at 3,812. Rogers opened the day with a PR time of 10.78 in the 100 meter dash with Boon coming in at 11.20. Then, in the long jump, Boon picked up his highest point total of the day with a leap of 7.11m/23-4.0 while Rogers reaching a mark of 6.82m/22-4.50. Boon also placed first in the shot put thanks to a PR throw of 13.14m/43-1.50 with Rogers also posting a PR of 12.67m/41-7.0. Rogers ended the day by clearing 2.03m/6-8.0 in the high jump and running 49.33 in the 400 meters, placing first in both events. Boon, meanwhile, jumped a height of 1.88m/6-2.0 and ran 50.69.
 
In the 400 meter hurdles, Garrett Gibson placed fourth overall with time of 52.54 while on the women's side, Ashlyn Dobson ran 1:02.44 to place seventh. Hannah McNaughton finished in fifth place in the javelin with a top throw of 38.20m/125-4.0. The Huskies also got new PR marks in the discus with sophomore Victoria Herpin throwing 40.36m/132-5.0 and Jorg Vanlierde posting a mark of 38.64m/126-9.0.
 
The Huskies will be back in action tomorrow, Apr. 10, for day two of the Texas A&M Team Invitational with events beginning at 10:15 a.m.
