HOUSTON – The Huskies softball team hosted their final doubleheader before conference play, sweeping the Prairie View A&M Panthers at Husky Field on Saturday afternoon. HBU finishes with a 7-1 preseason record as they enter SLC play.
GAME 1: The Huskies finished in a five-inning game with a grand slam from sophomore Caitlyn Brockway to win the game 12-1.
The Huskies started the bottom of the first with a walk for Shelby Echols and a single from Autumn Sydlik to put two Huskies on base. Fifth in the lineup for HBU was Jasie Roberts who blasted her first homerun of the season to center field to bring in two runs to begin the game 3-0. Lyndie Swanson held the Panthers scoreless to bring the lineup back out in the bottom of the fourth. With a Heidi Jaquez double to left center, Sydlik reaching on an error and Caitlyn Brockway hit by a pitch, the bases were loaded for another Roberts at bat. Roberts reached first on a fielder's choice to take out Sydlik at third, and Jaquez came home for another HBU run.
Prairie View (0-4) posted an unearned run in the top of the fourth to put them on the board but quickly ended their lineup as Jessica Patak entered the game. Riley Bullen ripped a double to left center and with a Jaquez single advancing to second on the throw, Bullen ran home leading to a Panther pitching change. With Sydlik on first after getting hit by the pitch, Brockway bangs a homerun to center field to bring in three. Leading 8-1 in the bottom of the fifth and an Echols and Jaquez walk, Sydlik is hit by another pitch to load the bases for the Huskies. Brockway step up to bat and seals the 12-1 HBU victory with a grand slam straight down center field.
The Huskies had 12 runs on eight hits with one error. Jessica Patak led the pitching staff with one hit and zero runs with three strikeouts. Swanson had three hits and one run while also adding three strikeouts.
Game 2: The pitching staff posted six strikeouts in the shut-out for the 11-0 win to take the series.
The Huskies began the first inning strong with a Jaquez double to bring home Echols. With Brockway on second and Jaquez on third, a Swanson advance to second on the throw put the Huskies on the board 3-0. The Huskies rotate back to the top of the lineup and Jaquez adds another double to season. With an eager at bat after being hit twice in the previous game, Sydlik pumps a fastball over the fence of the third base line for her first homerun of the season. With Brockway on third and Roberts at second after a wild pitch, Brockway advances to home unearned. With Roberts sitting on third, Riley Bullen homers to center for her second home run of her senior campaign to bring the Huskies up 8-0.
A Sydlik double adds two more runs for the Huskies in the bottom of the third as Katy Janes enters the mound to start the fourth. Swanson takes her second at bat to start the lineup and homers the final run to center field ending the series for HBU.
The Huskies has 11 runs on 11 hits with zero errors. Sarah Venker led the pitching staff with three hits and zero runs for 11 at bats with three strikeouts. Katy Janes finished the final two innings with one hit and zero runs for seven at bats while also posting three strikeouts.
The Huskies open SLC play as they host the Abilene Christian Wildcats with a 5 p.m. & 7 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, March 12 and wrap the series up with a NOON game on Saturday, March 13 at Husky Field.
