HOUSTON, Texas – HBU softball begins Southland Conference play with a home opening series against Abilene Christian on Friday, March 12 with a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. HBU has seen a 5-0 series run historically against ACU in their 8-7 series lead. The teams last met in May of 2019 with an 8-5 Husky win.
HBU (7-1) come out of preseason after a big 10-inning sweep over Prairie View A&M with a homerun from Autumn Sydlik, Lyndie Swanson, Jasie Roberts, Riley Bullen and two from Caitlyn Brockway. The Huskies are currently batting .330 led by senior catcher Heidi Jaquez batting a .500 with sophomore third baseman Sydlik just behind batting .458 and sophomore Brockway at .409 leading with two of the Huskies seven home runs.
Jessica Patak (3-1) has seen the most action for the pitching staff with a .88 ERA in 16 innings pitched with 11 strikeouts. Madison Cotton (2-0) has pitched 10.1 innings with a 0.00 ERA while Sarah Venker (2-0) has pitched 10.2 innings with a 1.31 ERA and seven strikeouts. The pitching staff has pitched 51 innings with a .69 ERA and 34 strikeouts.
ACU (4-13) comes out of preseason after a 0-4 performance at the Texas Tech Invitational falling 0-2 to Texas Tech and 0-2 to Kansas City. The Wildcats bat a .244 with 23 home runs on the season led by Calie Burris with a .347 batting average and seven home runs. Avery Miloch also has seven home runs while batting a .255 for the preseason.
The Wildcat's pitching staff holds a 6.86 ERA in 100 innings pitched led by Riley White (3-6) with a 5.82 ERA in 49.1 innings pitched with 12 strikeouts. Sam Bradley (1-6) follows her up with a 6.67 ERA in 35 innings pitched and 13 strikeouts.
The Huskies will head to College Station for a non-conference matchup with the Texas A&M Aggies for a mid-week game on Tuesday, March 16 at 6 p.m. before returning home in a weekend series starting with a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, March 19 against Southeastern Louisiana.
